Google is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Systems Performance Co-Design team. This role will involve providing technical leadership on high-impact projects, influencing and coaching a distributed team of engineers, and facilitating alignment across teams on goals, outcomes, and timelines. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in software development, data structures and algorithms, testing and launching software products, software design and architecture, performance analysis, and large-scale systems. Strong proficiency in Python, concurrency, and distributed systems is essential. The role will also involve designing, developing, testing, deploying, maintaining, and enhancing large-scale software solutions.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years in software development
  • 5+ years in testing and launching software products
  • 3+ years in software design and architecture
  • 5+ years in performance and data analysis
  • 3+ years in storage systems, analytics databases, or distributed query processing
  • Proficiency in Python, OOP, and functional programming
  • Expertise in concurrency, parallelism, and distributed systems
Good to have:
  • Master's degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 3+ years in technical leadership
  • 3+ years in complex, matrixed organizations
  • Experience working with cross-functional or cross-business projects

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with performance, large scale systems data analysis, visualization tools, or debugging.
  • 3 years of experience in at least some of the following - Storage systems, Analytics database, working with distributed query processing and low-level software.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, and/or cross-business projects.
  • Proficiency in Python, with good understanding of concurrent Object Oriented Programming and Functional Programming.
  • Proficiency in concurrency, parallelism, synchronization, consistency, events, scheduling, communications, and overhead in software and hardware systems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $189,000-$284,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
