Summary

The Associate Motion Capture Technician will assist in processing motion capture data, ensuring high-quality animation for game development. Responsibilities include prepping equipment, operating capture devices, supporting on-set activities, and building scripted tools for automation in both on-set and post-production workflows. Collaboration with the Motion Capture Director is key to optimize processes and implement new technologies. While some remote work is possible, the role primarily requires on-site work at the Marina Del Rey, CA studio. The ideal candidate possesses knowledge of motion capture, keyframe animation, human anatomy, and experience with optical capture systems (Optitrack/Vicon/etc.), biped animation, and software like MotionBuilder and/or Maya. Scripting experience (Python/C#) is crucial.

As an associate Motion Capture Technician, your job will be to assist in the processing of motion capture data. Provide support in facilitating motion capture shoots which includes set building and capture system operations. You’ll work with the Motion Capture Director to build customized scripts and tools for on-set and post processing automations. A go-getter attitude and a drive to learn new things and adapt new technologies on the fly is expected. 

You will be a valued member of the mocap team that will assist in ushering new technology and perfecting processes into Free Ranges’ development practices.

While some remote work is possible, this position is required to work with the team on-site at our mocap studio in Marina Del Rey, CA. As such, candidates must be located in the Greater Los Angeles area.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process motion capture data captured on stage to deliver the highest quality animation to our animation teams.
  • Assist in motion capture shoots by prepping suits and props, markering up talent, operating capture devices on stage and general mocap stage support.
  • Build scripted tools for mocap team use on stage and for post production that facilitate the goals set forth by the motion capture director.

Qualifications:

  • A general knowledge of both motion capture and key frame animation 
  • A general understanding of human kinesiology and anatomy
  • Experience working optical capture systems (Optitrack / Vicon / Motion Analysis / Lightstorm)
  • Experience with biped animation
  • Knowledge of Motionbuilder and/or Maya
  • Experience with scripting languages (python/C#)
  • Resides in Los Angeles, California 
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs over head

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Optitrack Motive software
  • Knowledge of perforce (p4v) is a plus
  • Knowledge of Motion Analysis Cortex a plus
  • Knowledge of industry-standard software Motionbuilder and/or Maya
  • Mocap experience in game development (or film production)
  • Python experience inside Motionbuilder
  • Python/C#/Pymel/QTdesigner experience a plus
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 4/5+
  • Experience with Xsens (or other mocap solutions)
