Job Description

As a Clean Animation Artist, you will be responsible for producing finalized versions of rough animation drawings, maintaining design consistency, ensuring correct coloring and labeling in TV Paint, addressing notes, delivering on time, and maintaining quality. You'll also communicate progress, work in a team, adhere to production tools, and follow established protocols. The role involves working closely with directors and production teams to complete tasks, potentially leading and guiding the team, and maintaining effective communication. The artist is expected to promote a good work ethic, keep project information confidential, and attend meetings. This position requires full-time, in-house work in Kilkenny, Ireland.
Must have:

  • Strong time-management skills
Good to have:
  • 2+ years of experience

Cartoon Saloon, established in 1999 by Paul Young, Tomm Moore, and Nora Twomey, is a world renowned animation studio with five Academy Award® and two Golden Globe® nominations and many award wins including BAFTA® and Emmy®. Located in Kilkenny, Ireland, the studio produces brave and beautiful shorts, feature films, and TV series. Cartoon Saloon is the founder and host of Kilkenny Animated, an annual festival of visual storytelling incorporating exhibitions, talks and performances celebrating the creativity of the animation craft.

Position

As a Clean Animation Artist you will be responsible for:


  • Producing cleaned up finalised versions of the rough animation drawings, ensuring that the characters are drawn accurately according to the model sheets
  • Maintaining consistency of design, structure and line quality according to the production style in TV Paint
  • Ensuring that all levels inside TV Paint are coloured correctly and labelled accordingly using the naming conventions set by CS
  • Addressing any notes or retakes given by supervisor, lead and tech check
  • Delivering cleaned up animation on time for approval by Clean-up supervisor and Director;
  • Ensuring quality and style consistency is maintained within the feature project
  • Addressing any problems and communicate progress of work to the Production Manager and Coordinator
  • Open to share with the team processes and assets that could help with continuity and productivity
  • Working cohesively within a team environment and ensure high levels of communication at all times
  • Adhering to the production tools used for tracking workflow, input and delivery/output of scenes
  • Communicating with Clean Animation Supervisor and department coordinator regarding any issues / concerns that may impact ability to meet deadlines;
  • Open to share with the team processes and assets that could help with continuity and productivity
  • To work cohesively within a team environment ensuring high levels of communication at all times
  • To work under the supervision and guidance of the Art Director, Animation Supervisor and Production Manager
  • To work with relevant Production Coordinator/s to ensure the status of your work is known, allowing them to track the progression of assets
  • To deliver technically clearly named and well layered files to the compositing department following established protocols
  • To attend departmental kick-off meetings and reviews as needed.
  • Work according to the expected schedule
  • Address any problems and communicate progress of work to the Supervisor and Coordinator
  • Maintain well structured files and adhere to established layer and naming conventions.
  • Work closely with the Director, Art Director and Production teams to complete assigned tasks
  • Lead and guide the team, alongside Production, in developing solutions if limitations of schedule are flagged as a possible issue
  • Maintain effective communication with all crew members
  • Promote a good work ethic and positive atmosphere within the team
  • Assist in keeping information relation to the projects confidential and secure
  • Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and trainings as needed
  • Be available on Google Chat and by emails during working hours
  • This list is not exhaustive and might be complemented by reasonable and related tasks that are requested of you

Requirements

  • Knowledge of TV Paint
  • Knowledge of animation process & pipeline
  • Strong drawing and clean animation skills to be shown in portfolio/showreel.
  • Ability to closely follow briefs and generate high quality animation
  • Good team player and communicator
  • Strong time-management skills
  • Must be able to take direction, respond well to notes and pitch creative/technical solutions to potential problems
  • Min. 2 years previous experience on features would be a plus, but not essential
  • Previous experience in clean animation would be a plus, but not essential
