The Advanced Processor Lab (APL) at Samsung's SAIT seeks a Performance Modeling Intern for Summer 2025. The intern will assist senior engineers in developing, maintaining, and analyzing CPU performance models. Responsibilities include cycle-accurate performance modeling of CPU microarchitectures, analyzing architectural designs' impact on performance metrics (throughput, latency, power efficiency), working with simulation tools, conducting bottleneck analysis, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and documenting results. The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of computer architecture, experience with performance modeling tools (gem5, Sniper), programming skills (C/C++, Python/Perl), and data analysis abilities.
Must have:
  • Pursuing Bachelor's/Master's/PhD in EE/CE
  • Strong computer architecture understanding

What You’ll Do

The Advanced Processor Lab (APL) is one of the research teams of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) which is Samsung‘s R&D hub, established as the incubator for cutting-edge technologies. SAIT’s mission has covered various research areas from AI applications/algorithms research, neuromorphic processor, domain-specific accelerators to new materials, quantum computing, and supercomputer system. 

APL is committed to shaping the future of CPU processor and SoC architecture for the most demanding applications of the future like AI and HPC. We are building the foundation of processors and the related platform which are applied to various business targets of Samsung in the future. 

We are seeking a highly motivated intern to join our CPU Design and Micro-Architecture team in Summer 2025. As a Performance Modeling Intern, you will work closely with senior architects and engineers to develop, maintain, and analyze models that evaluate CPU performance. You will gain hands-on experience in modeling different architectural components and help optimize CPU designs for efficiency, speed, and power consumption.

Location: Onsite at our San Jose headquarters 5 days a week 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of cycle-accurate performance models for CPU microarchitectures.
  • Analyze architectural designs and configurations to evaluate their impact on performance metrics such as throughput, latency, and power efficiency.
  • Work on performance simulation tools to model workloads and assess design trade-offs.
  • Assist in conducting performance bottleneck analysis and providing insights for potential improvements in CPU design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architecture, design, and verification teams, to refine models based on feedback and real-world data.
  • Document performance results and provide detailed reports on findings.

What You Bring

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields. 
  • Must have at least 1 academic quarter/semester remaining 
  • Strong understanding of computer architecture, including CPU pipeline, memory hierarchy, and instruction sets.
  • Familiarity with performance modeling concepts and tools (e.g., gem5, Sniper, or equivalent).
  • Experience with programming languages such as C/C++ and scripting languages like Python or Perl.
  • Ability to analyze large datasets and extract performance trends.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Coursework or experience in CPU architecture, performance analysis, or microprocessor design.
  • Experience with cycle-accurate simulation tools or performance evaluation frameworks.
  • Knowledge of RISC-V or other instruction set architectures.

Hourly Base Pay Rate

$28 - $62 USD
