Job Description

News Editors are the air-traffic controllers for CNBC.com. They direct CNBC’s online breaking news coverage and oversee homepage programming. They work closely with CNBC’s top managers and the newsroom to ensure readers are informed. The job involves staying organized while several major stories break simultaneously. News editors must ensure CNBC.com delivers top news, place articles on homepages, edit breaking news, and write breaking news as needed.
Must have:
  • 2+ years of reporting or editing experience in fast-paced newsroom
  • Demonstrated ability to write clean copy fast.
  • Ability to work quickly under deadline pressure.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Good to have:
  • Strong news judgment and fast-paced editing skills.
  • Capable of detail-oriented planning and on-the-fly news calls.
  • Background in business and/or finance journalism.
  • Proficient in AP style and light photo-editing skills.
  • Experience at a large online content destination.
  • Ongoing knowledge of and interest in the business world and financial news.

Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('SpinCo') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.

Job Description

News Editors are the air-traffic controllers for CNBC.com’s website and app. They direct CNBC’s online breaking news coverage and oversee homepage programming for the web and app platforms. They work closely with CNBC’s top managers and the full newsroom to ensure our readers know everything necessary to make fast, informed decisions in business and finance.

News editors should have the ability to stay organized when several major stories break at the same time. A plane might be attempting an emergency landing while the president is talking about trade, and oil suddenly takes a major dip.

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure CNBC.com is delivering all the top news of the day
  • Place articles on the homepages, packaging art and related topics as needed and adjusting headline tone as needed
  • Edit breaking news articles and help reporters and section editors improve their online presentation
  • Write breaking news as needed

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

  • 2+ years of experience reporting or editing in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Demonstrated ability to write clean copy fast
  • Ability to work quickly under deadline pressure
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience

You’ll stand out if:

  • You’re accurate, fast and cool under pressure. The job calls for strong news judgment and involves fast-paced editing and directing a team of breaking news reporters
  • You’re capable of detail-oriented planning and on-the-fly news calls
  • You have a background in business and/or finance journalism.
  • Proficient in AP style and light photo-editing skills
  • You have experience at a large online content destination, such as a major online news site or financial newspaper
  • You possess ongoing knowledge of and interest in the business world and financial news
