Microsoft Ads Fraud Detection team seeks a Senior Applied Scientist to research and develop cutting-edge fraud detection algorithms. The role involves designing and implementing machine learning models that run at web scale, protecting billions of dollars in revenue. Responsibilities include developing a deep understanding of the advertising ecosystem to identify new fraud signals, investigating complex attacks, and creating scalable tools for high-impact results. The ideal candidate possesses expertise in computer security research, machine learning, and a strong understanding of advertising technologies. The position requires developing methods to detect various automation tools, and converting adversary tactics into actionable signals. Collaborating with the wider security community to improve fraud detection methods is also crucial. The successful candidate will be based in either Mountain View, CA or Redmond, WA.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's/Master's/PhD in relevant field
  • 4+ years experience (depending on degree)
  • 2+ years in computer security or fraud
  • Develop fraud detection algorithms
  • Investigate complex attacks

Overview

Microsoft Ads Fraud Detection operates at the intersection of Security and Machine learning. We design and develop fraud detection algorithms that run at web scale in real time and protect billions of dollars of revenue from fraudsters. Our algorithms need to run in a high precision/ high recall operating point.


As a Senior Applied Scientist, Fraud Detection on our team in either Mountain View, CA or Redmond, WA you'll be at the forefront of Fraud research.

 

  • You will develop a deep understanding of advertising eco-system at an individual request level and exploit that knowledge systematically to identify new signals that can set fraudsters apart.
  • You will investigate complex and evolving attacks and develop signals to detect them. Given the large surface area that needs to be protected, you will create tools to allow you to scale and drive high impact.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics,Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., Computer Security Research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics,Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., Computer Security Research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics,Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., Computer Security Research)
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 2+ year of experience in the field of Computer Security or fraud

Other Requirements:

Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Papers in top tier Security conferences (USENIX Security Symposium, IEEE Security and Privacy Conference, ACM Conference on Computer Security).

Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
