This involves collaboration with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, facilities, construction) to ensure control systems meet requirements and are optimized for efficiency, reliability, and safety. Responsibilities include designing control systems for utilities and building systems, collaborating on problem identification and system requirements, developing control system designs (including instrumentation selection, wiring diagrams, and BOMs), cross-checking designs for feasibility, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations, developing internal standards, managing documentation, and improving workflows. The role requires strong electrical engineering knowledge, proficiency in EPLAN, and a deep understanding of control system theory and sensor applications.
Must have:
  • 5+ years experience in control systems design
  • Proficiency in EPLAN
  • Strong electrical engineering knowledge
  • Understanding of sensors and control system theory
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards
What to Expect

Tesla is a leading electric vehicle and clean energy company with a mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. Our Gigafactory in Berlin is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that will produce batteries, electric powertrains, and vehicles, and we are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer to join our Facilities team.

Job Summary:
As a Senior Controls Design Engineer – Technical Services, you will be responsible for designing control systems for the facilities and infrastructure at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin. This includes all utilities and building systems that support the manufacturing process and make us a state-of-the-art facility.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, facilities, and construction to ensure that control systems are meeting requirements and are optimized for maximum efficiency, reliability, and safety.

We’re seeking highly motivated candidates, willing to challenge the status quo and drive change to make an impact.

What You’ll Do
  • Design control systems for utility and building systems that support all production facilities and infrastructure. Examples include process utilities, HVAC, electrical, and building automation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify the problem and derive system requirements. Sketch out solutions for control systems and contribute to P&ID diagrams, Cause & Effect matrix and Sequence of Operation documents.
  • Develop control system design in detail including instrumentation selection, wiring diagrams (EPLAN) and Bill of Materials.
  • Cross-check control system designs with control engineers and field engineers for feasibility, improvements, and best use of resources on site.
  • Ensure compliance with design systems to standards, codes and regulations.
  • Drive the development of internal standards to unify equipment, sensor and instrumentation selection.
  • Manage documentation and design of the controls scope in exchange with other disciplines. Ensure documentation is meeting internal standards, it is available for execution and is updated after execution as-built.
  • Bring improvements to documentation and drawing standards to the team to improve overall workflows.
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in control systems design in a manufacturing or industrial setting
  • Strong proficiency in designing electrical systems in EPLAN.
  • Strong electrical engineering knowledge to size and design electrical systems – not limited to PLCs and sensors but also drives and solenoids, contactors, fuses, power supplies and wires.
  • Strong understanding of sensors and their underlying working principles – with hands-on experience in sensor applications.
  • Good knowledge of control system theory to derive control concepts for applications.
  • Knowledge of industry code and standards. Ability to quickly grasp local regulations around workplace and environmental protection.
  • Structured work ethics to order incoming design requests and manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex control system issues.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities and deadlines
  • Desire to stay up-to-date with developments and best practices in control systems. Willingness to dive down

Evidence of Excellence:
To be considered for this role, candidates must provide evidence of excellence in their application by including specific examples of previous projects that demonstrate their skills and experience in control systems design. Surprise us!
