Microsoft Research's Future Experiences Team seeks a Senior Researcher in Human-Computer Interaction and Human-Centered AI. The role involves collaborating with researchers, engineers, and designers to create prototypes of novel systems, developing new technologies, conducting scholarly research (publications at top venues are expected), and working with product groups for real-world impact. Focus areas include Human-AI interaction, generative UIs, multimedia systems, accessible design, affective computing, responsible AI, and spatial computing. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate in a related field, a strong publication record, experience building interactive systems, conducting user studies, and working in multidisciplinary teams. They should be able to drive research agendas from ideation to publication and product impact, and demonstrate proficient communication and collaboration skills.

Overview

The MSR Future Experiences Team is inviting applications for a Senior Researcher to join our team in solving real-world problems and pushing the boundaries of Human-Computer Interaction and AI. We are an interdisciplinary group of researchers, engineers, scientists, and designers who are exploring future human experiences through prototyping, system-building, design sketching, and observational study of human behavior. We are seeking exceptional candidates to advance the state-of-the-art in human-computer interaction (HCI) and Human-Centered AI to help shape future user experiences. Focus areas include, but are not limited to, the following:  

 

  • Human-AI/agent interaction and experiences  
  • Generative user interfaces and interaction techniques
  • Multimedia perceptual systems and interaction  
  • Accessible and inclusive design  
  • Affective computing  
  • Responsible AI  
  • AI mediated sensemaking  
  • Data visualization  
  • Spatial computing  
  • Human-Robot Interaction

As a Senior Researcher on our team, you will work closely with researchers, engineers, and designers at Microsoft to create working prototypes of novel systems, developing new enabling technologies as needed. We expect the candidate to perform scholarly research, publish academic papers, and engage with Microsoft product groups to advance the state of the art and create meaningful impact. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:  

  • Doctorate (or currently pursuing) in to Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related STEM field or equivalent experience  
  • A research and innovation track record demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, patents, and/or real-world impact   

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Deep knowledge of recent advancements in HCI, including generative AI.  
  • Publication record as a lead author or essential contributor at top HCI or AI venues such as CHI, UIST, ICMI, CSCW, ICML, AAAI, NeurIPS, ICLR, etc.  
  • Experience building real-time interactive systems, including those involving AI, visualization, graphics, novel interaction techniques   
  • Experience conducting research user studies of publishable quality  
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams along with a team player mindset     
  • Proficient communication and collaboration skills  
  • Ability and desire to get up to speed and contribute to new topics and techniques  
  • Work independently and in a team, take initiative and lead engagements as required 
  • Reference letters are welcomed, though they are not mandatory. Please include them if available.   

Research Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
