This Senior Software Engineer role involves building services, tools, and automation for managing Microsoft's global datacenter fiber operations, including fiber maintenance, hardware diagnostics, and network recovery. The work utilizes advanced AI agents and innovative automation platforms (Temporal, custom agent frameworks) to solve complex operational challenges at an unprecedented scale. Responsibilities include defining network operational problems, building autonomous AI agent platforms, designing observability interfaces, writing high-quality code, collaborating with cross-functional teams, optimizing AI agent workflows, and validating solutions through rigorous testing. The ideal candidate possesses strong experience in network design, development, and automation, along with expertise in AI agents and workflow automation.

We run one of the largest and most sophisticated fiber-optic networks globally, and your role as a Senior Software Engineer - Optical Network Agents & Automation Platforms is crucial. You’ll build services, tools, and automation to manage global datacenter fiber operations, fiber maintenances, hardware diagnostics, and network recovery. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation 
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation. 
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation 
    • OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. 

Other Requirements:

 

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 11+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation 
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 8+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation 
    • OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 6+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation 
    • OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation. 
  • 1+ year(s) experience delivering network designs into production and experience with live site accountability for a network. 
  • 1+ year(s) technical experience working with large-scale cloud or distributed systems. 
  • Management Information Systems (MIS), or other industry or product specific Engineering Certifications.
  • Proven expertise building and deploying autonomous AI agents and workflow automation at scale.
  • Extensive experience with orchestration platforms such as Temporal or similar workflow automation frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience designing management and observability interfaces for complex distributed systems.
  • Practical experience in large-scale optical network infrastructure operations.
  • 3+ Years experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, or systems engineering experience with coding in Python, Java, C#, or Go.

Cloud Network Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
