This internship involves contributing to industry-leading simulation capabilities while gaining real-world experience. The intern will support the Office of CTO and the Mechanical Business Unit in researching and implementing new algorithms for human simulation, image-based modeling, patient-specific model calibration, and model verification and validation. The project focuses on developing a library of validated, dynamic heart models for cardiac device testing, virtual imaging trials, and advanced physiological simulations. This is a 40-hour per week paid internship for 13 weeks. Responsibilities include familiarization with the pyAnsys Heart library, reverse engineering 4D CT data, designing workflows for model calibration, validating model motion, refining the modeling pipeline and automating key steps and documenting results.
Must have:
  • Enrolled in a MS or PhD program in engineering, physics, or mathematics
  • Experience using scripting languages like Python and Matlab
  • Experience with statistical data analysis and optimization
  • Experience with Finite Element Methods
  • Experience with clinical imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound
Good to have:
  • Proficiency with scripting languages like Python
  • Experience using 3D software for datasets creation such as 3DSlicer, Mimics, Monai, Simpleware
  • Experience in the use of AI and Machine Learning for clinical image processing
  • Experience with 3D, FEA modeling such as LS-DYNA
  • Experience with statistics and optimization

You will contribute to our industry-leading simulation capability while gaining real experience in your field of study. You will support Office of CTO and the Mechanical Business Unit in research and implementation of new algorithms for human simulation, image-based modeling, patient specific model calibration, and model verification and validation.  This internship project will lay the groundwork for developing a library of validated, dynamic heart models for use in cardiac device testing, virtual imaging trials, and advanced physiological simulations. This Internship is a 40-hour per week paid position for 13 weeks.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Familiarization with the pyAnsys Heart open-source library for multiphysics cardiac modeling.
  • Reverse engineer 4D CT clinical imaging data to create simulation heart geometries
  • Design and develop workflows for patient-specific model calibration to 4D CT data; development of motion tracking and fitting routines.
  • Validation of model motion against CT-derived deformation fields and comparison with published clinical metrics.
  • Repeat modeling and calibration for additional patient cases; refinement of modeling pipeline and automation of key steps.
  • Final analysis, documentation of results, and preparation of a project summary report.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrolled in a MS or PhD program pursuing degree in engineering, physics, mathematics or related degree.
  • Experience using scripting languages such as Python and Matlab.
  • Experience with statistical data analysis and optimization.
  • Experience with Finite Element Methods.
  • Experience with clinical imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, Ultrasound.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred proficiency with scripting languages such as Python
  • Preferred experience using 3D software for datasets creation such as 3DSlicer, Mimics, Monai, Simpleware
  • Preferred experience in the use of AI and Machine Learning for clinical image processing
  • Preferred experience with 3D, FEA modeling such as LS-DYNA
  • Preferred experience with statistics and optimization
