Job Description

Virtuos is seeking a Technical Artist to join their team. Responsibilities include project setup (reviewing technical documentation, setting up version control, testing proprietary tools, and acting as a liaison between art production and the client), daily tasks (developing technical content like shaders and PCG, supporting art teams on technical issues, training teams, creating automation scripts, optimizing content for multiple platforms, and supporting planning of tool deployment), and collaboration with engineers and artists. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with game art pipelines (Unreal, Unity), DCC software (Maya/3DS Max/Blender), PBR, lighting and shading, version control systems, and scripting languages like Python. Experience with middleware is a plus. The role requires excellent communication, independence, and initiative.
Must have:
  • Game art pipeline experience (Unreal/Unity)
  • DCC software knowledge (Maya/3DS Max/Blender)
  • Understanding of PBR, lighting, shading
  • Version control system knowledge
  • Python scripting skills a plus
Good to have:
  • Procedural systems knowledge
  • Unreal Blueprint experience
  • Animation, particle effects, custom shaders
  • Software architecture and Agile understanding
  • Middleware experience (SpeedTree, Simplygon, etc.)

ABOUT THE POSITION

Responsibilities

Project Setup: 

  • Review Technical documentation from client, setup version control solution and game build. 
  • Test any proprietary tool provided by client and instruct art teams on its usage at the beginning of production 
  • Be the bridge and main point of contact between art production and client on any technical issue 

Day-to-day tasks: 

  • Develop technical content (Shaders, PCG, etc.) for the project. 
  • Support of project art teams on any technical issue (on art software, plugins, scripts, ...). 
  • Train art teams in use of specific tools and best practices. 
  • Creation of basic automation scripts and small tools to increase production efficiency 
  • Work with engineers and artists to optimize content for many platforms. 
  • Supporting producers and art team leaders in planning deployment of tools. 

Qualifications

Technical Qualifications 

  • Familiarity with the game art pipeline in Unreal, Unity or a comparable modern game engine 
  • Good knowledge of DCC software (Maya/3DS Max/Blender). Knowledge of procedural systems is a plus. 
  • Understanding of physically based rendering (PBR), lighting and shading 
  • Knowledge of revision control systems, such as Perforce, Git, SVN. 
  • Knowledge of Python, DCC scripting is a plus 
  • Unreal scripting experience using Blueprint or other is a plus 
  • Understanding animation system, particle effects and custom shaders in game engine is a plus 
  • Understanding of software architecture and Agile workflow is a plus 
  • Experience with middleware such as SpeedTree, Simplygon, FaceFX, Allegorithmic Substance, etc. is a plus. 

Other requirements 

  • Good in written and spoken English, able to clearly communicate ideas and technical knowledge 
  • Independent, pro-active, showing initiative. 
  • Participated in or shipped one or more games as a technical artist is a plus
