The Communications Manager will support the U.S. Crop Protection business strategic agenda. Responsibilities include managing proactive and reactive external communications to enhance Syngenta’s reputation, developing external communications strategies, providing guidance in managing major issues and crisis communications, and managing communications resources. The role involves working with various teams to ensure alignment of communication strategies, developing communications assets, providing spokesperson development, supporting events, and representing Syngenta in external organizations.
Must have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge of communications best practices.
  • 10 years of corporate communication experience.
  • Experience in managing media relations and crisis/issues communications.
Good to have:
  • Litigation and agriculture communications experience ideal, but not mandatory.
  • Agribusiness market and business understanding preferred.

To support this mission, Syngenta’s Crop Protection Communications Team is seeking a Communications Manager in Greensboro, NC. This role will support the delivery of the U.S. Crop Protection business strategic agenda and liaise/coordinate with key stakeholders. External communications efforts/investment should focus on: Delivering the US Crop Protection Strategy, protecting freedom to operate, enhancing business reputation.

Accountabilities:

  • Manage proactive and reactive external communications to enhance Syngenta’s reputation as a top innovator and supplier of choice in Crop Protection products/services and Digital technology.
  • Know the US crop protection agriculture business and anticipate communications needs.
  • Provide communications and media interview advice and counsel to regional leadership and managers.
  • Develop external communications strategies/plans in coordination with the US Crop Protection Strategic Communications plan and US Crop Protection Commercial plan and ensure effective message/narrative development for business positioning and thought leadership with key audiences through ag trade and were approved with mainstream and business news media and social media channels and events.
  • Provide experienced guidance in managing major issues, crisis communications, and strategic messaging. Demonstrate expertise in developing strategy and implementing innovative and effective communications aimed at key audiences including news media, channel partners, growers, suppliers, legislators, regulators, communities, talent recruits, and other stakeholders.
  • Work closely with Corporate and Crop Protection Communications, as well as Legal, Business Sustainability, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial, and other functions to ensure alignment of communications strategies, messages and plans, and efficient communication operations.
  • Manage communications resources including budget and suppliers (agencies, writers, graphic artists, video producers, etc.) to develop communications assets: presentations, print and digital collateral, news releases, Q&A’s, backgrounders and videos, etc.
  • Provide spokesperson development including management training/coaching of colleagues who represent the business in public, especially with news media.
  • Coordinate/support US Crop Protection events and speaking opportunities with external stakeholders.
  • Support Global programs that promote Syngenta’s positioning, e.g., Sustainable Excellence.
  • Represent Syngenta, and company perspective on key issues, with relevant external organizations that support our business and freedom to operate; serve as a member of relevant industry associations communications committees.
  • Provide communications advice, counsel, and support for community relations/contributions activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related discipline.
  • Advanced knowledge of communications best practices including digital and social media, issues, crisis and change management communications, as well as top-tier media relations.
  • 10 years of corporate communication experience.
  • U.S.-based with global/regional experience.
  • Communications strategy, planning, implementation and supplier management.
  • Experience managing media relations and crisis/issues communications efforts.
  • Litigation and agriculture communications experience ideal, but not mandatory.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and processes.
  • Track record of delivering effective communications strategies, plans and campaigns in a regulated industry to enable and support business success and protect freedom to operate and reputation.
  • Expertise in employing digital tools and social media.
  • Experience in managing media and external communication efforts to support business and product issues and litigation.
  • Agribusiness market and business understanding preferred.
