Job Description

Tesla's traction inverter team seeks a performance modeling intern to enhance power electronics in their vehicles. Responsibilities include implementing power stage loss and thermal models in MATLAB/Simulink, collaborating with engineering teams to define performance limits, leveraging the model for vehicle architecture initiatives, and maintaining/expanding model capabilities. The intern will contribute to critical projects, grow technically, and collaborate with experienced engineers in a dynamic environment. This role requires proficiency in powertrain component/power converter modeling using MATLAB/Simulink, experience with software development and maintenance, and a strong understanding of switching waveforms, semiconductor losses, and power component thermal behavior.

Must have:

MATLAB/Simulink powertrain modeling
Software development & maintenance
Understanding of switching waveforms, semiconductor losses, and thermal behavior

Good to have:

Knowledge of electric machines, thermal & mechanical design
Basic control theory & embedded programming experience
Git/Github experience

What to Expect

Tesla’s traction inverter team is looking for a skilled and motivated performance modeling student to push the power electronics propelling our vehicles to the next level. The team leverages a parametric inverter performance model, and you will develop it, maintain it, and use it to run trade-off studies, facilitate multi-objective optimization, and communicate performance expectations and requirements. It will allow the intern to grow technically and personally while experiencing life at Tesla with projects that are critical to their team’s success. It's an exciting work environment with plenty of engineering resources and bright colleagues to collaborate with.

What You’ll Do

Implement (MATLAB/Simulink) power stage loss and thermal models for traction inverter applications
Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, PCBA, and firmware engineering teams to identify the limits of traction inverter performance
Leverage the traction inverter model to produce repeatable and dependable results to drive vehicle architecture initiatives and roadmaps
Maintain and grow organically the capabilities of the model - software architecture

What You’ll Bring

BSc or higher degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience
Experience with powertrain component and/or power converter modelling in MATLAB/Simulink
Experience working with, developing, and maintaining custom software source code
Good understanding of switching waveforms, semiconductor losses and thermal behavior of power components
