Job Description

Valve is seeking a Research/Experimental Psychologist to contribute to crafting compelling gameplay experiences, improving customer experiences on Steam, conducting statistical analyses, researching hardware technologies, designing experiments, improving playtesting methodologies, and developing innovative data acquisition methods. The role involves applying expertise in experimental design, research methods, statistics, and human behavior across various company initiatives. Responsibilities include conducting research in cognitive, social, and human factors psychology, and utilizing programming languages like C++, Python, SQL, and PHP for data analysis and project execution.
Must have:
  • Graduate degree in Psychology or related field
  • Advanced knowledge of statistics
  • Experience applying research skills to consumer products
  • Research experience in relevant psychology fields
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, SQL, and PHP

Some projects that Valve psychologists have worked on in the past include:

  • Crafting compelling gameplay experiences for future Valve titles
  • Providing insights on human behavior to improve customer experiences on Steam, our game distribution platform
  • Conducting statistical analyses on Valve's gameplay, financial, and company data to identify patterns of behavior
  • Researching compelling new hardware technologies
  • Designing experiments to evaluate various gameplay hypotheses and design choices
  • Improving existing playtesting methodologies
  • Developing innovative ways of acquiring data to answer questions about Valve's products and business practices

The psychologists that we currently have at Valve have a graduate degree in Psychology or related field; advanced knowledge of statistics; proven experience applying research skills to the development of consumer products and services; research experience in cognitive, social, human factors, and related fields in psychology; and proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, SQL, and PHP.
