Flying Bark Productions is working on exciting projects such as the highly anticipated Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Netflix's Stranger Things animated series, Marvel Studios’ What If…?, Disney Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, as well as our production Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

The Senior Previs and Proxy Artist will be crucial in developing the visual storytelling. This position involves close collaboration with the Director and storyboarding team to produce high end previsualization sequences and CG proxy models that serve as the foundation for the final animation. Strong skills in storytelling, pacing, and cinematography are vital to ensuring that the project's creative vision is transformed into engaging visual sequences.


About the role:

  • Creation and maintenance of versatile high-quality and lower res proxy models, with an emphasis on topology and organic modelling, under the guidance and direction of the technical and creative supervising crew;
  • Develop accurate previs without cheats, that align with feasible production capabilities;
  • Apply previs methods to construct scenes that effectively integrate camera movements and proxy sets for enhanced storytelling;
  • Partner with art, storyboarding and edit departments to ensure the smooth integration of previsualization elements into production sequences;
  • Organise and publish geometry for the proxies, ensuring that the scenes are streamlined and prepared for asset creation;
  • Engage closely with directors and supervisors to accurately interpret their artistic vision and reflect it in both the proxy models and previs sequences;
  • Maintain effective communication with production teams and other departments, proactively addressing any potential issues that could affect the timely delivery of materials;
  • Critically assess and refine both models and sequences to uphold the highest standards of visual storytelling and technical accuracy;
  • Tackle performance and layout issues related to proxies by leveraging storyboards and concepts to determine unique assets that need to be developed and to identify opportunities for reusing existing assets;
  • Work within the constraints of the pipeline, and provide feedback about where workflows could be improved;
  • Strong communication and ability to work to a verbal or visual brief, flagging in advance any issues that may impact on
  • Successful timely delivery of material to Production and the Supervising crew;
  • Offer guidance and support to junior artists, helping them grow their skills and contributing positively to a collaborative team atmosphere;

And all other duties and responsibilities as reasonably required by the Production Company.


About you:

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in previsualization or similar roles within the animation industry.
  • Proficient in industry-standard software, especially Autodesk Maya, within a production setting.
  • Strong skills in storytelling, composition, animation timing, and cinematography.
  • An eye for artistic composition, particularly regarding camera angles and movements.
  • Solid knowledge of asset and layout workflows, CG camera lens information, camera rigs and cinematography;
  • Ability to meet consistently meet deadlines;
  • Excellent communication abilities, with a commitment to sharing knowledge and fostering a team-oriented environment;
  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively, taking direction while also being flexible and responsive to changes;
  • Enthusiasm and passion for animation, cameras and cinematography.
