The Assistant Technical Designer for Softlines apparel reports to the Tech Designer or Sr. Tech Designer. Responsibilities include developing and creating full production tech packs for global styles, analyzing garment construction and making adjustments based on factory, fabric, and cost factors, ensuring construction consistency, analyzing pattern and marker layout, drafting and revising patterns, managing sizing/grading, maintaining brand consistency, maintaining a sloper/block library, working with overseas agents and factories, partnering with internal and external teams, monitoring guest feedback, meeting deadlines, sketching, writing fit comments, and attending meetings. This role requires a deep understanding of garment construction, patternmaking, and the production process.
Must have:
  • 2-5 years' experience in softlines technical design
  • Knowledge of patternmaking, draping, fit correction, and grading
  • Knowledge of garment construction and production
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and other relevant software
  • Ability to manage tech packs and meet deadlines
Good to have:
  • Experience with PLM (FlexPLM)
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite, Optitex or Gerber Accumark
  • Experience with 3D design software (CLO, Browzwear, Optitex)

Job Summary:

The Assistant Technical Designer for Softlines apparel reports to the Tech Designer or Sr. Tech Designer in the Softlines department. In this role, the chosen candidate will have understanding of managing category/department(s) for apparel, and will develop/create full production tech packs for Softlines global styles to send to factory for costing and sample submission.

This is a full time role.

Portfolio Required: Please submit a portfolio highlighting your work in Technical Design.

In This Role, You Will (Responsibilities):

  • Support the overall Technical Design Department processes and procedures.
  • Analyze garment construction and adjust as needed based upon factory, fabric, and cost factors.
  • Ensure consistency of construction details within the department.
  • Analyze pattern and marker layout, adjusting if possible to maximize yield with support and as needed.
  • Draft and revise patterns to approvable stage with support.
  • Analyze proper sizing/grading for managing department with support.
  • Maintain Brand consistency in fit/make/quality.
  • Maintain sloper/block library for assigned category.
  • Work with supervisor to periodically review established departmental standards and guidelines for fit and construction against the market.
  • Confirm correctness of sketch with technical requirements of style.
  • Evaluate all samples received prior to fitting against instructions given and adjust as required for production. 
  • Facilitate fit sessions with cross-functional teams with live model, mannequins, and/or VTC-virtual teleconference; give priority attention to fit, construction and follow-through with written fit comments.
  • Partner and guide overseas agents and factories to deliver quality products of managing dept/s with limited support.
  • Partner with internal and external teams to maintain Brand consistency of managing dept/s with limited support.
  • Have comprehension of: design/style/silhouette function and textile weaving/knitting and trim
  • Monitor guests’ feedback and callouts online of managing dept/s.
  • Manage and meet deadlines daily, weekly, seasonally, quarterly, and annually with limited support, and be mindful of company calendar and overlapping timeline/delivery.
  • Attend departmental and team meetings.  Provide recap as necessary.
  • Sketching flat sketches and correcting sketches using Adobe Illustrator (CAD).
  • Write and communicate effective fit comments/corrections to maintain established turn times for sample comments and resubmits.

You Will Have (Basic Qualifications):

  • 2-5 years’ experience in softlines technical design
  • Knowledge of patternmaking, draping, fit correction and grading. Knowledge of fabric/trim yield calculation & costing is a plus
  • Knowledge of quality garment construction and production friendly construction. Knowledge of production cutting/sewing/machinery is a plus.
  • General understanding of technical skills in manufacturing and production process from development to pre-production.
  • Understanding of garment assembly/construction and pattern drafting/draping of managing dept/s.
  • Understanding of garment making from 1st sample to pre-production to final production step-by-step.
  • Have fundamental understand of grade rules and grade application of managing dept/s.
  • Have fundamental understand of fabrication usage and trim treatment of managing dept/s.
  • Have basic knowledge of Child Safety Regulations and Testing Standards.
  • Computer/technology literate - MS Office, Illustrator, clothing pattern software, 3D fitting software.

  • Ability to lift 35 lbs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience creating and managing tech packs in PLM (FlexPLM) is a plus.
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite, Optitex or Gerber Accumark 2D digital pattern making; experience with 3D (CLO, Browzwear, Optitex) is a plus.

Required Education:

  • 2-4 year specialized degree required in fashion/apparel design or related field
