Job Description

As an Associate Security Counsel, you will oversee Google’s response to requests for user data from public safety and similar agencies from around the world as part of Google’s Data Disclosure Strategy team in the legal department. This program provides legal subject matter expertise to ensure that user data is managed in a manner consistent with Google’s principles and policies, and governing legal requirements. The team works closely with the compliance team and others across the Google family, including members of the internal security, engineering, product and policy teams, as well as others within the legal department. The fast-paced work is exciting, important and often groundbreaking. 20th century laws don't always solve 21st century problems, and Google Legal crafts innovative approaches for working with some of the toughest legal challenges of the information age.
Must have:
  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Experience with data privacy laws, regulations, or incidents.
  • Experience with user data disclosure.
  • Experience with cybersecurity legal issues or conducting internal investigations.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law.
  • Oversee handling of legal process and requests for user data from government agencies.
  • Establish and enforce policies relating to disclosure requests.

  • Experience as a state or federal prosecutor, or public defender.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with quick turnaround.
  • Ability to build effective relationships across relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to work on a broad range of legal matters.
  • Excellent communication, people management, public speaking and team skills.

  • Communicate with government agencies concerning requirements in particular cases.
  • Work on relevant Google privacy initiatives.
  • Support the public policy, legal and communications team in handling data disclosure issues.

Job Details

Minimum qualifications:

  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
  • Experience with any of the following: compliance with data privacy laws, regulations, or incidents, user data disclosure (such as the electronic communications privacy act or state equivalents), cybersecurity legal issues, or conducting internal investigations.
  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience as a state or federal prosecutor, or public defender.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with quick turnaround, and to build effective relationships across relevant stakeholders.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $195,000-$293,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
