Job Description

This role involves developing and editing approximately 10-15 book titles annually, working with authors, publishers, and agents. Responsibilities include line editing, plot outlining for ghostwritten projects, writing marketing copy, managing schedules, and pitching original story ideas (aiming for 4 sold projects yearly). The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in editorial book publishing, preferably in adult fiction (Book Club, Women’s, Romance) or YA/Children’s. Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail are essential. The role requires managing complex schedules, working independently and as part of a team, and occasional extended hours.

Your New Role...

Responsible for developing new ideas, working with writers, and interfacing with editorial counterparts at publishing houses and interfacing with other members of the publishing community. Works independently to edit projects.

Your Role Responsibilities...

  • Develops, edits, and manages a list of approximately 10-15 titles per year with minimal supervision from Sr. Editorial staff. This includes: providing line and overarching edits to authors; writing detailed plot and character outlines for ghostwritten and development projects; writing and editing cover and promotional copy; maintaining author and publisher schedules.
  • Pitches and develops story and property ideas, from one-liners to full plot treatments. Development goal is to sell 4 original projects per year.
  • Initiates and maintains relationships with writers (for existing and new projects), editors, publishers, and agents.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience...

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years experience in editorial book publishing. Experience in adult fiction – Book Club, Women’s, Romance – and/or YA/Children’s a plus.
  • Experience in development preferred.

Education, Professional Training, Technical Training or Certification

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • BA/BS degree preferred

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of the marketplace, in publishing, film, and television.
  • Ability to manage complex book schedules with tight deadlines
  • Ability to participate in managing the development process
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Other Requirements

  • Established relationships with writers and agents
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work well with a team as well as independently
  • Flexibility to work extended hours to accommodate crash schedules.

Actual salaries will vary based on several factors, including but not limited to external market data, internal equity, location, skill set, experience, and/or performance. Base pay is just one component of Warner Bros. Discovery’s total compensation package for employees. Pay Range: $47,466.00 - $88,150.00 salary per year. Other rewards may include annual bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition, Warner Bros. Discovery provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays and sick time and vacation.
