About the job:
Google's Network Engineering team operates the network that serves millions of Internet users worldwide. As a Network Engineer, you'll impact design and feature enhancements to ensure smooth operations. You'll monitor network performance, coordinate maintenance, adjust hardware, and respond to connectivity issues. You'll work on the Global Internet Edge team, developing Google's internet interface, conceptualizing, prototyping, testing, integrating, staging, piloting, and maintaining network architectures and software systems at the edge of Google's global network. This role involves collaborating with vendors to deliver new features, define new configuration models, and scale systems sustainably through automation. You'll also partner with internal application groups to design network infrastructure that meets their requirements.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Networking or related technical field
  • 6 years of experience in IP networking
  • Experience with network routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS)
  • Experience with C, C++, Go, or Python
  • Experience with network equipment providers (Juniper, Cisco, Arista, Nokia)
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
Good to have:
  • Experience in developing networking products, technologies, software, and protocols
  • Experience in designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems
  • Understanding of designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting distributed systems
  • Ability to debug, optimize code, and automate routine tasks

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Networking, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience in IP networking in a production environment.
  • Experience in network routing protocol design and troubleshooting in BGP, OSPF, IS-IS and MPLS.
  • Experience in one or more of the following: C, C++, Go, or Python.
  • Experience with network equipment providers (e.g., Juniper, Cisco, Arista, Nokia, etc.).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.

As a Network Engineer on the Global Internet Edge team, you will help develop Google's interface to the Internet. You will work on conceptualizing, prototyping, testing, integrating, staging, piloting, making generally available, maintaining, and decommissioning the fundamental network architectures and software systems relating to the internet edge of Google’s global network.

Responsibilities

  • Engage and improve the life cycle of networks from inception and design, to qualification and validation, through deployment, operation and optimization.
  • Work with networking vendors to deliver new features, define new features, identify and fix bugs. Define new open configuration models, work with vendors to adopt these models and deliver them.
  • Scale systems sustainably through mechanisms like automation, and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity. 
  • Work with other team members and groups to analyze requirements or potential problems and develop solutions and policy recommendations.
  • Partner with Google’s internal application groups and design network infrastructure which meets their networking requirements.
