The Principal Environment Artist will be responsible for creating visually stunning and immersive environments for Soulframe, a fantasy MMORPG. This involves using advanced DCC applications (like Designer, Painter, etc.) to model, texture, and optimize 3D assets for a next-gen engine. Responsibilities include developing game-ready assets, collaborating with other artists and teams, contributing innovative ideas, optimizing models, participating in feedback loops, and mentoring junior artists. A strong portfolio showcasing high-fantasy environments and proficiency in PBR texturing workflows is required. The role involves working within an agile Kanban workflow using Jira.

ABOUT THIS POSITION

We are seeking a Principal Environment Artist to join the creative team behind the enchanting world of Soulframe. For this role you will help bring the game’s fantasy universe to life, delivering visually stunning and immersive environments that captivate players. You will work with a proprietary engine across multiple platforms, creating everything from sweeping landscapes to intricate, fantastical interiors and otherworldly designs.
Your deep understanding of art theory and mastery of modern DCC applications (Designer, medium-poly and sub-d modeling, Painter, etc.) will be critical in shaping the game’s visual identity. A strong portfolio demonstrating your craft in high-fantasy settings is essential. The ideal candidate thrives in an agile environment driven by JIRA in a Kanban workflow and possesses a keen knowledge of efficient production techniques for games.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilize your advanced traditional art skills and expertise with the latest DCC applications to create high-quality 3D models.
  • Develop game-ready art assets, including modeling, texturing, and UV mapping, with guidance from the Lead Artists and Art Directors.
  • Stay aligned with the project’s vision, maintaining a deep understanding of the art and story of Soulframe.
  • Contribute innovative and original ideas toward all art aspects of the game’s production and development
  • Actively participate in the feedback loop including accepting feedback from and providing feedback within the art team as required staying current on the scope and understanding of the project
  • Coordinate with Production and the team on the generation and supply of marketing assets as defined by the schedule
  • Multitask effectively, prioritize competing demands, and following through on details
  • Support and mentor other artists who are less experienced and require more direction
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

  • 7+ years previous experience in the video game industry
  • A portfolio that demonstrates excellent modelling and a strong understanding of environment texturing workflows (IE: PBR, Designer, tiling/trim/hybrid trim/decal textures and similar)
  • A strong understanding of modern DCC apps (Designer, medium poly and sub-d modeling, Painter, etc.)
  • Strong lighting skills and experience creating normal maps and applying shaders
  • Above average ability to model, texture, and optimize props and assets for a state of the art next-gen game engine
  • Possess exemplary oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Substance suite of products highly beneficial
  • University degree in visual arts with specialization in graphic design, commercial art, graphic communications or cartooning OR completion of a college diploma program in graphic art OR Equivalent experience
  • A solid ability to optimize your models
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills

 PREFERRED EXTRAS

  • An excellent understanding of efficient techniques for game production, traditional art background or experience, strong composition skills, and a sense of colour theory
  • Have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for Soulframe
