Summary

The Principal Scientist, Materials will advance Samsung's next-generation technologies by independently pursuing research at the Advanced Materials Lab (AML) in Cambridge, MA. Responsibilities include analyzing current research, designing and performing experiments, contributing to next-generation materials development, collaborating with colleagues and university partners, and preparing technical papers and patent applications. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in inorganic materials synthesis, characterization, design of experiments, database management, and ideally, experience with combinatorial chemistry, thin film fabrication, and automated robot synthesis systems. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a global team.

What You’ll Do

SSI’s Advanced Materials Lab (AML) in Cambridge, MA is seeking a Principal Engineer with expertise working on Materials development. Specifically, the candidate should have experience with inorganic materials synthesis, analysis and characterization. The ideal candidate will have expertise in design of experiments/statistical methods and experience building and maintaining databases. Candidates with experience performing combinatorial chemistry, thin film fabrication, building Automated Robot synthesis system design/ building a major plus.  The successful candidate will independently pursue research advancing AMLs development of next generation technologies.

The Advanced Materials Lab in Cambridge, MA is part of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. headquartered in San Jose, CA. AML is engaged in materials design and modelling for a broad range of next generation technologies such as batteries and semiconductors. The work is conducted internally, with academic collaborators, and with industrial partners. As a part of Samsung’s advanced research effort, AML works closely with counterparts at Samsung laboratories in Korea. We are looking for strong candidates with demonstrated excellence their fields.

  • Analyze current status of research in advanced materials to identify influential factors
  • Design and perform experiments and analysis that advance the state of the art in field of expertise.
  • Contribute to the Samsung mission for next-generation materials development.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues at AML and in Korea, and with university partners.

 

What You Bring

  • Bachelors in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field with 20+ years of experience or Masters with 18+ years of Industry Experience or with 15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience synthesizing inorganic materials from solution phase (i.e., sol-gel, co-precipitation, spray pyrolysis, Thin film process).
  • Experience in electrochemical device fabrication, such as cell assembly, cell testing, and data analysis.
  • Expertise in design of experiments/statistical methods and experience building and maintaining databases.
  • Expertise on coding skill for robot arm handling.
  • Excellent written communication skills for the preparation of technical papers, patent applications, presentations, application notes, SOP, and other such documents.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to communicate clearly.
  • English fluency

Preferred skills:

  • Demonstrated experience in materials characterization techniques such as Raman Spectroscopy, NMR, XRD, SEM and TEM.
  • Knowledge of electrochemistry in the aqueous and solid state.
  • Thin film fabrication process
  • Lab automation
  • Moisture sensitive chemistry experience using a glove box a plus.
  • Experience with high-throughput synthesis techniques such as robotics and large dataset data analysis.

Base Pay Range

$192,500 - $307,500 USD
