Job Description

The Principal Software Engineering Manager at Microsoft's Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team will lead a cross-functional team in developing cloud-based solutions with customers. This role requires deep experience in modern software engineering practices and cloud technologies. Responsibilities involve guiding stakeholder partnerships, designing solutions, optimizing code, driving project plans, acting as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), leading product development and scaling, and ensuring product quality. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership, collaboration, and technical skills. They will work closely with customers, product teams, partners, and open-source communities, contributing to the Microsoft platform. The role involves up to 25% travel.
Must have:
  • 6+ years technical engineering experience
  • Experience with multiple programming languages (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python)
  • Deep expertise in modern software engineering practices and cloud technologies
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills
  • Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams
Good to have:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science
  • 10+ years technical engineering experience
  • 4+ years people management experience

The Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team is a global engineering organization that works directly with customers looking to leverage the latest technologies to address their toughest challenges.

 

We work closely with our customers’ engineers to jointly develop code for cloud-based solutions that can accelerate their organization. We work in collaboration with Microsoft product teams, partners, and open-source communities to empower our customers to do more with the cloud. This work involves the development of broadly applicable, high-impact solution patterns and open-source software assets that contribute to the Microsoft platform.

 

We are hiring a Principal Software Engineering Manager with deep experience and expertise in designing and delivering solutions using modern software engineering practices and cloud technologies. You will work closely with a technical program manager and data scientist to co-lead a cross-functional team to work side-by-side with high-impact and strategic customers and their engineers to build innovative solutions.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

  • Microsoft is unable to sponsor a work visa for this role due to the nature of the role’s job duties.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
    • OR related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years people management experience.
  • Enjoy travel and are comfortable with travel up to 25%

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Guides partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within and across teams.
  • Guides teams and leads identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Guides team to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers).
  • Guides team and acts as an expert for Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and monitors other engineers across product lines, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
  • Leads product development and scaling to customer requirements and applies best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations and holds accountability for products that do not meet expectations.
