Job Description

As a Principal Systems Engineer at Fluence, you will spearhead the technical development of new energy storage products, tackling intricate engineering challenges. You will be responsible for leading cross-functional teams, collaborating with stakeholders, and ensuring the alignment of technology solutions with business objectives. This role demands driving innovation, optimizing product performance, and maintaining a competitive edge in the market. Responsibilities include overseeing product development from start to global deployment, ensuring products meet safety and quality standards, leading program execution, and collaborating with cross-functional teams for various aspects such as control system architecture and specification development. The role also involves cost control, continuous improvement through upgrades, and fostering a collaborative team environment. You will also need to stay current with industry trends, define product vision, and communicate project status effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Must have:
  • 10+ years of product development experience with leadership
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or Computer Science
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
Good to have:
  • Experience in Energy Storage domain
  • Familiarity with inverters, power conversion systems and battery systems
  • Knowledge of relevant industry standards like UL9540, IEEE693, etc.
  • Experience with Jira, Testrail, ETAP, Matlab Simulink, MBSE, etc.

In the role of Principal Systems Engineer, you will lead the technical development of new energy storage products and work on cutting edge engineering challenges. You will guide cross-functional teams, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure the alignment of technology solutions with business goals. Your role is crucial in driving innovation, optimizing product performance, and maintaining a competitive edge in the market.

Responsibilites:

    • Oversee the end-to-end product development of Fluence’s MW to GW-scale lithium ion battery energy storage products, from conception to global deployment
    • Ensure products are developed to meet safety, quality, performance, and scalability standards
    • Lead and support program execution through the full project lifecycle, including requirements definition and review, architecture development, specification development, requirements verification, and compliance assessment.
    • Work with cross-functional teams and support development of control system architecture, electrical and mechanical drawing packages, descriptions of operations, control methodology, configuration specifications, interface specifications, and commissioning instructions. Review technical deliverables lists and review the major technical deliverables
    • Lead program design reviews and support configuration management and engineering review boards, model-based system engineering efforts, technical planning, system integration and risk/opportunity management
    • Control costs and develop strategies to reduce costs and improve product reliability
    • Evaluate changes/upgrades to process control systems and make recommendations for continuous improvement
    • Support, lead, and facilitate internal and external Root Cause Analysis, Lessons Learned, and Management of Change Activities
    • Perform system design and tradeoff studies
    • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment, promoting continuous learning and professional growth
    • Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends and evaluate their potential application to company products
    • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to define and refine product vision and strategy
    • Communicate technical concepts and project status effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
    • Act as a liaison between engineering teams and other departments to ensure cohesive and aligned product development efforts.

What will our ideal candidate bring to Fluence?

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or a related field.10+ years of experience in product development, with at least 3 years in a leadership or senior technical role
    • Proven track record of successfully leading complex product development projects
    • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
    • Ability to mentor and motivate teams to achieve high performance
    • Experience in Energy Storage domain preferred but not required
    • Familiarity with any of the following is a plus:  inverters, power conversion systems, lithium ion battery systems (LFP / NMC / NCA), BESS, UL9540, UL9540A, UL1973, UL1741, NFPA855, IEC 62933, IEC 61439, IEC 62109, NFPA68, NFPA69, NFPA70, NFPA72, NFPA855, UN38.3, IEEE693, Jira, Testrail, Jama, ETAP, Matlab Simulink, MBSE, DFMEA, HARA
