About The Content Platform

Job Summary

Avalara is seeking experienced Site Reliability Engineer who are driven by a passion for applying their expertise to tackle challenging problems, to join our Engineering Teams

Objectives

  • Run the production environment by monitoring availability and taking a holistic view of system health
  • Build software and systems to manage platform infrastructure and applications
  • Improve reliability, quality, and time-to-market of our suite of software solutions
  • Measure and optimize system performance, with an eye toward pushing our capabilities forward, getting ahead of customer needs, and innovating for continual improvement
  • Provide primary operational support and engineering for multiple large-scale distributed software applications


Responsibilities

  • Gather and analyze metrics from operating systems as well as applications to assist in performance tuning and fault finding
  • Partner with development teams to improve services through rigorous testing and release procedures
  • Participate in system design consulting, platform management, and capacity planning
  • Create sustainable systems and services through automation and uplifts
  • Balance feature development speed and reliability with well-defined service-level objectives


What You'll Need to be Successful

Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience in programming with high-level languages such as Python, Ruby, Terraform, Shell, or JavaScript, with the ability to apply structured and object-oriented programming principles.
  • Strong understanding and hands-on experience with distributed storage systems (e.g., NFS, HDFS, Ceph, Amazon S3) and dynamic resource management frameworks like Kubernetes, Apache Mesos, or Yarn.
  • Experience with system monitoring, gathering metrics, and performance tuning for both infrastructure and applications.
  • Proactive approach to identifying problems, performance bottlenecks, and areas for improvement


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science or related discipline


Preferred Skills And Qualifications

  • Networking: A good understanding of the OSI model, TCP/IP, and DNS; particularly as it relates to cloud environments.
  • Observability: Experience with developing service level indicators and objectives, instrumenting software, and building alerts.
  • Proficiency with source code management and containerization tools, such as GitLab or GitHub.
