Job Description

The Senior Software Engineer will join the Identity engineering team responsible for building and managing Microsoft's online identity providers. This role involves designing, developing, testing, and shipping solutions to large-scale technical problems related to improving customer security posture, focusing on areas like challenge infrastructure redesign to enhance resiliency and user experience, and bot attack mitigation. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers, showcasing leadership in improving development practices and mentoring junior engineers. Responsibilities include owning complete feature areas, writing high-quality code, ensuring reliable operation, and fostering a data-driven approach. The position requires experience with languages like C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python and a strong understanding of object-oriented design.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Several years of technical engineering experience
  • Proficiency in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills
  • Experience with large-scale systems and solutions
Good to have:
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Experience in designing and building highly available systems

The Identity engineering team builds and manages Microsoft’s online identity providers for all of Microsoft’s online services and platforms like Azure, Office, Xbox, and HoloLens. We boldly pursue big ideas that power transformational advances in online security and user management. Our work spans both the consumer and enterprise space and can be found in internet scale online services, the Windows operating system and most phones and handheld devices. Identity engineering employees have deep technical expertise, customer insights, and a clear point of view that comes from first-hand, very large-scale experience. Qualifications

Required: 

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with several years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python Ability to deal with ambiguity and understand key business needs in line with competing priorities and apply the right technology and implementation to the solution. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills with a solid understanding of object-oriented design, coding patterns, and testing practices.  Strong industry experience collaborating with others on designing, developing, testing, and shipping solutions to large scale technical problems

 

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

Responsibilities

Identity provides the platform used to "Challenge" sign up sessions and block bot attacks on Microsoft's sign up infrastructure and other features vulnerable to bot attacks. Our team is responsible for the redesign of Microsoft's challenge infrastructure to improve resiliency of challenges available, improve good user experience when interacting with Microsoft services and use of challenge mechanisms to reduce fraud.

Key responsibilities for this position include:

Work with Engineers, Product Managers, Designers, and Partners to deliver sets of features with the right overall design and architecture. 

Own and deliver complete feature areas and large-scale solutions including design, architecture, implementation, testability, debugging, and shipping with secure long term support. 

Show leadership and take accountability in improving development practices and influence direction across related sets of systems, platforms, and/or products  Provide mentorship and coaching to more junior engineers to help them identify and propose relevant solutions. 

Write clean well-thought-out code with an emphasis on quality, performance, simplicity, durability, scalability, reusability, and maintainability. 

Be committed to delivering the best experience for our customers and partners, and then iterate based on qualitative and quantitative feedback. 

Help create a diverse and inclusive culture, participating in hiring where appropriate, so everyone can bring their full and authentic self and where we do our best work as a result. 

Take responsibility for reliable uninterrupted operation of features with the earliest detection of issues in production.  

Foster a data driven approach with everything you do from analysing and prioritizing business requirements, including customer feedback, and using metrics to prove success.  Expose test coverage issues, organize, and implement tests and types of tests needed, and resolve problem areas. 

Gain a working understanding of Microsoft businesses and collaborate with mentors and leaders to contribute to cohesive, end-to-end experiences for our customers and users.

Participation in an on-call rota.
