As a Senior System Integration Engineer here at Illumina in Cambridge, UK, you will be part of Illumina’s On-Market Support and Development (OMSD) team, contributing to the continuous improvement of automated sample preparation and NGS workflows. Your work will directly support Illumina’s mission to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome.
This role is ideal for a candidate with experience in assay, product development and in liquid handling automated workflows . You will be working with Hamilton liquid handling systems and VENUS software to support the on-market performance of Illumina's library preparation products, including VeriSeq™ Non Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT).

Why You
You will have knowledge and expertise in automation workflows and pipeline development, particularly with Hamilton liquid handling systems and VENUS software. You will be a skilled System Integration Engineer who has the ability to lead the development and optimization of automated genomics workflows, program Hamilton systems, and drive integration projects from inception through to verification and validation. To be successful in this role, you will thrive in a fast-paced environment, have exceptional communication skills, and possess strong collaboration skills to work across functions including Assay Development, Software, Manufacturing, Quality, and Field Support. You will have experience in scripting and developing end-to-end NGS workflows, familiarity with additional scripting/programming languages such as Python or R, and a hands-on, proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities:

  •  Lead the development and optimization of automated genomics workflows on Hamilton liquid handling systems, with experience in Venus software
  • Program and troubleshoot Hamilton systems with a focus on both technical performance, end-to-end workflow continuity and user-friendly execution, supporting both scripting for standard use, as well as advanced script customization.
  •  Independently initiate, direct, and execute development activities collaborating with assay teams to support scientific studies, including complaint investigations, design improvements, and product characterization.
  •  Take ownership of small automation design improvement project or significant portions of a larger automation initiatives, with oversight
  • Use judgment to define scope and objectives of project, assist in developing instructions and guidelines to perform the functions of the job most effectively.
  •  Develop verification and validation test plans; lead and/or execute study protocols and generate reports
  •  Contribute to the creation of technical documentation, protocols, and training resources to support reproducible implementation.
  • Lead and participate in risk assessments and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)  activities, refining both user and system requirements.
  • Represent on-market automation in cross-functional project teams and coordinate with technical and cross-functional (Assay, Engineering, Software, Manufacturing, Field Support, etc.) teams as required to implement design changes, troubleshoot and move investigations forward.
  • Communicate results and conclusions to aid in team decision making in a fast-paced environment.
  • Influences decisions at critical interfaces to other disciplines, leveraging your expertise and insights.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or/and master’s degree in Related field with 5+ years of relevant experience in a successful product development environment; Clinical development experience is preferred.
  • Experience in developing workflows for automated laboratory liquid handling platforms such as Hamilton, Tecan, Eppendorf, etc
  • Familiarity with additional scripting/programming languages such as Python or R is a plus; knowledge of communication languages (e.g., JavaScript) may be beneficial depending on integration needs.
  • Familiarity with integrating automated liquid handling solutions
  • Participation in product development and experience with verification and validation activities for automation workflows; familiarity with regulated environments (e.g., ISO 13485, IVD, CLIA) is helpful but not required.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work in fast-paced, cross-functional environments.
  • Comfortable reprioritizing project work in response to changing needs of on-market products.
  • Hands-on, proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
