Job Description

The Senior Technical Artist (Character) will bridge the gap between character art and technology, ensuring characters look and perform well in various scenarios. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining character pipelines, creating and optimizing shaders, collaborating with artists and engineers for procedural solutions, ensuring asset performance, refining real-time deformation, supporting AI-driven character systems, troubleshooting technical challenges, researching and integrating cutting-edge technologies, and documenting processes. The role requires a passion for game development and strong problem-solving skills, along with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Must have:
  • 3+ years of experience as a Technical Artist specializing in characters.
  • Strong knowledge of Unreal Engine (materials, shaders, Niagara, character systems).
  • Expertise in character pipelines, including rigging, skinning, and animation.
  • Proficiency with tools like Maya, Blender, Houdini, or equivalent.
  • Experience with shader development (HLSL, GLSL, or Unreal's Material Editor).
  • Strong understanding of optimization techniques for real-time character rendering.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (Python, Blueprint, or MEL) for tool development.
  • Experience with procedural character generation and AI-driven animation techniques.
  • Passion for game development and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Good to have:
  • Experience with Unreal Engine’s Metahuman framework.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven animation tools (Nvidia ACE, Audio2Face, etc.).
  • Knowledge of physics-based simulation for hair and cloth.
  • Background in technical animation and motion capture processing.

Your Role

We are looking for a Senior Technical Artist (Character) to join our team in Munich. You will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between character art and technology, ensuring our characters look and perform exceptionally across various in-game scenarios. You will collaborate closely with artists, animators, and engineers to develop robust character pipelines, tools, and shaders that elevate the visual quality of our game.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain character art pipelines, ensuring efficient workflows for character artists and animators.
  • Create and optimize shaders, materials, and rigs for high-quality character rendering and animation.
  • Collaborate with character artists and engineers to implement procedural solutions for character customization and animation.
  • Ensure character assets meet performance benchmarks while maintaining visual fidelity.
  • Work with animation teams to refine and improve real-time deformation, skinning, and rigging solutions.
  • Support AI-driven character systems by developing dynamic material and rigging solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges related to character implementation in Unreal Engine.
  • Research and integrate cutting-edge technologies (e.g., Nvidia Audio2Face, Unreal Engine Metahuman, AI-driven animation).
  • Document processes and provide training to the art team on technical best practices


Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a Technical Artist specializing in characters for games.
  • Strong knowledge of Unreal Engine (especially materials, shaders, Niagara, and character systems).
  • Expertise in character pipelines, including rigging, skinning, and animation workflows.
  • Proficiency with tools like Maya, Blender, Houdini, or equivalent for rigging and character art pipelines.
