The Windows Shell Team at Microsoft is seeking a Software Engineer to contribute to the development of key Windows features like the Start Menu and Taskbar. This role involves collaborating with various teams (Product Management, Data Science, Design, Marketing) to create new features, build full-stack, end-user-facing applications, and utilize AI technologies. Responsibilities include designing and implementing features, conducting data-driven experiments to improve business metrics, and staying current with industry advancements. The ideal candidate will have experience building UI using XAML and designing, building, and shipping software at scale using C/C++ along with experience with languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

The Windows Shell team is looking for a collaborative and customer-obsessed Software Engineer to join us on our journey of driving innovation in the most iconic surfaces in Windows such as Start Menu and Taskbar.


As a Software Engineer on the Windows Shell team, you will partner closely with Product Management, Data Science, Design, and Marketing teams to come up with new feature ideas that solve real customer problems. You will have the opportunity to build full stack, end-user-facing features along with platform components that drive those scenarios. You will innovate in new technologies utilizing the power of AI, build delightful experiences, and shape the process and culture of Windows to ship value to customers faster. You will design and run experiments to make data-driven decisions to move business metrics.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years experience designing, building and shipping software at scale using C/C++.
  • Familiarity with building UI using XAML.
  • Experience making data-driven decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science OR related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.   

 

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Works with appropriate stakeholders across disciplines to determine user requirements for key Windows Shell surfaces.
  • Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents with little oversight.
  • Creates and implements full stack, end-user-facing features for the Windows Shell, reusing code as applicable.
  • Makes data-driven decisions through experimentation to move key business metrics.
  • Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
