Meow Wolf is seeking a Tech Install Lead for a project-based role anticipated to last over 12 months. This position involves leading and assisting teams in the installation of custom interactive artwork. The role requires hands-on experience with soldering, cable management, low-voltage installations, and troubleshooting custom interactive artwork. Responsibilities include installing and troubleshooting integrated tech components, wiring, repair of connections, and documenting changes. The ideal candidate is a quick learner, self-motivated, with practical programming experience and familiarity with schematics. This role contributes to Meow Wolf's creative output and enhances the guest experience.
Must have:
  • 5+ years of experience with power distribution systems
  • Experience with EMT conduit, electrical tools, and equipment
  • Understanding of electrical circuits and microcontrollers

  • Experience in guest-facing exhibits
  • OSHA 10 certification
Good to have:
  • Experience with creative programming for immersive arts

Job Disclosures:

Project Based Role: This is a project-based position with an anticipated duration of 12+ months.

Location: Los Angeles, CA or Santa Fe, NM

Compensation:  This is a non-exempt position paying $40/hr.

Job Summary:

 Do you love wires? Do you have experience in soldering, cable management, custom tech installations, low voltage and enjoy implementing that technical skill into interactive artwork? Join Meow Wolf’s dynamic Technical Direction department as a Tech Install Lead (TIL)! As a member of the TD team, a Tech Install Lead is an integral member of and a creative collaborator in artistic productions. A Tech Install Lead is expected to lead and assist teams of multidisciplinary creators on Meow Wolf production projects. 

A Tech Install Lead will have experience working in a collaborative environment and will demonstrate proficiency in troubleshooting and installing custom interactive artwork, objects and installations that seam together sensors, microcontrollers, computers, lights, sound, video, and electromechanical elements. The Tech Install Lead handles the bulk of the installation of custom lighting, sound and video systems. They will display a willingness and potential to both lead small teams and assist others on projects. The Tech Install Lead will display a notable attention to detail and a high level of craftsmanship in their finished work. The Tech Install Lead will receive day-to-day direction from the Art Installation Manager and collaborate closely with Project stakeholders and partnering departments, especially the Tech Fabricators. They will strive to bring out the best in others, both creatively and culturally as considerate and reliable team members. 

Project tasks may include troubleshooting elements with integrated Tech components and onsite installation of art elements with different technical requirements. There may be wiring and repair of connections on site. The successful candidate is a quick learner, self-motivated, and driven to try new technologies. Some practical experience with computer programming is desired, as is a general familiarity with schematics and datasheets. You will need to be familiar enough with all types of electrical systems to either lead your own troubleshooting efforts, or to quickly learn what is needed to solve problems. You will document, assemble, install and troubleshoot bespoke interactive artwork that seams artistic elements together with various technical elements, thereby contributing to Meow Wolf's stellar creative output and elevating the guest experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Soldering and assembly of electrical systems, including printed circuit boards. 

  • Wiring and cable management for production elements, including terminating cables and hook-up wires.

  • Install complex electrical systems, technical components, and devices.

  • Troubleshoot and test continuity of installed electrical circuits.

  • Install and bend EMT conduit and pull cables according to the wiring diagram.

  • Replace or repair electrical components and low voltage wiring as needed on site during installation.

  • Read and interpret Technical Systems Documentation, shop drawings, mechanical and architectural drawings, and electrical code specification to determine wiring layouts. 

  • Assist Tech Fabricators with installing large and complex projects that have a variety of integrated technical components.

  • Document changes in electrical systems on Tech Systems Documentation for each production element after installation. 

  • Utilize various programming languages to test assembled electrical components after installation. 

  • Develop solutions for installing tech components in projects with consideration for serviceability and access. 

  • Other duties related to Tech Install Lead as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years practical experience with power distribution systems and networks. 

  • Prior experience with running EMT conduit, electrical tools, and electrical equipment.

  • Solid understanding of electrical circuits, microcontrollers, and electrical theory to support your own troubleshooting and problem solving.

  • Soldering of electrical components, cable management, and wiring strategies.

  • Prior experience producing, installing, and maintaining technical components in guest-facing exhibits

  • OSHA 10 certification

Preferred experience with creative programming for immersive and interactive arts, in particular working with any of the following disciplines:

  • Theatrical Lighting and Projection / Video Systems

  • Audio Control & Playback Systems, specifically Q-SYS & Networked Audio Protocols such as Dante

  • Architectural Lighting Systems, specifically ETC Paradigm

  • TouchDesigner, Max/MSP, other Visual Programming Environments

  • Processing, Arduino IDE, C++, Python, & other Creative Programming Environments

  • Creative Technology and Physical Computing

  • Network Engineering Principles

Work Environment and Physical Demands

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required.  

Work Environment:

This position works primarily in an indoor setting with exposure to noisy environments, dim lighting, strong visual effects including strobing lights, special effects, fog machines and small and/ or enclosed spaces.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical ability to walk, stand, take stairs/slides/elevators, and navigate the elements during the day and night. Employee may be required to remain in a sitting or standing position for prolonged periods, and repeat motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.

The employee will comply with company and OSHA standard workplace safety protocols. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 9a.m. to 5 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Supervisor Responsibilities:

This position does not require supervisory responsibility.

Travel:

This position will require some travel (10%-25%) and will require temporary relocation up to 4 months.
