Electronic Arts is seeking a VFX Artist Intern for their Iron Man project. The intern will collaborate with Lead Artists, Designers, and Developers to create high-quality real-time visual effects using the Unreal Engine. Responsibilities include developing particle systems, meshes, shaders, textures, and animations; managing in-game particle effects for weapons, vehicles, and environments; and ensuring visual quality while adhering to performance constraints. The internship will involve a hybrid work model, combining on-site and remote work. The internship is for the Summer of 2025, and candidates must be enrolled in an accredited degree program and legally authorized to work in Canada.
Must have:
  • Experience with 2D and 3D software
  • Knowledge of game engine (Unreal Engine)
  • Portfolio showcasing VFX work (natural, fantastical, dynamics)
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Our VFX Artist Intern will report to our Lead VFX Artist, joining our Iron Man team

Responsibilities:

  • Partner closely with the Lead Artists, Designers, and Developers teams to create high quality real-time visual effects. FX assets include particle systems, meshes, shaders, textures, rigid body sims and animations

  • Create FX assets using Epic Unreal game engine, according to the agreed design and within the constraints of the target hardware and software. There is an emphasis on knowledge sharing between different teams throughout EA's studios

  • Be responsible for technical and aesthetic considerations for the project's visual effect art style. A balance must be achieved between a high visual quality and staying within our performance constraints

  • Manage In-Game Particle Effects for action-adventure games. These include weapon and vehicle FX, environmental, destruction, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in 2D packages such as Photoshop, After Effects or Nuke

  • Experience in 3D packages such as Max or Maya

  • Knowledge of environmental effects, lighting, and dynamics

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Able to work well in a team and communicate with other disciplines

3D Portfolio Requirements:

A link to your portfolio must be included with your application/resume. All portfolios should contain a breakdown of the work. It must be very clear what you are responsible for in your reel, screenshots, scanned pictures, web page portfolio, etc. Please include as many of the following elements as you can:

  • Examples of natural and organic effects (smoke, fire, waterfalls)

  • Examples of fantastical effects animation (spells, explosions)

  • Examples of rigid or soft body dynamics

  • Effects created in a game engine

  • Examples of modeling texturing and lighting

  • Examples of various animations

We are only considering students who will be enrolled in an accredited degree program in the summer of 2025, slated to graduate no earlier than December 2025. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada on a full-time basis during the 4-month internship. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

About The Company

Motive is a AAA video game development studio established in 2015, and located in Montreal, Quebec. The studio is part of Electronic Arts studio network and has worked on action-adventure licenses. Motive supported the solo campaign on Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II and was the lead developer of Star Wars™: Squadrons and the Dead Space™ remake. The team is currently working on an Iron Man™ game.
