This role, reporting to the Head of Legal for the Americas, supports U.S. operations. The ideal candidate has 6+ years of experience from a top law firm, regulator, or in-house, with strong academic credentials and excellent writing/analytical skills. Experience with money services businesses and cryptocurrency licensing, specifically maintaining and acquiring money transmitter licenses in the U.S., is crucial.
Must have:
  • Lead legal matters for U.S. money transmitter and regulatory license maintenance.
  • Conduct legal research on money services businesses and crypto laws.
  • Advise on legal and regulatory aspects of U.S. strategic initiatives.
  • Draft and revise licensing maintenance/application materials and reports.
  • Communicate with federal and state regulators on licensing efforts.
  • Collaborate with product and business development teams.
  • Assist with civil, litigation, and regulatory matters; supervise outside counsel.
  • Manage additional legal requests and advise on legal concepts/risk.
  • Active membership with a U.S. state bar (CA or NY preferred).
  • 6+ years of relevant regulatory licensing experience.
  • Experience with regulatory reporting obligations.
  • Experience engaging with federal and/or state regulators.
  • Experience managing teams and driving projects to completion.
  • Highly-driven, proactive, responsive, and precise.
  • Experience making strategic recommendations to senior management.
  • Enthusiastic about blockchain technology and legal/regulatory landscape.
  • Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to effectively advise and build trust with business teams.
  • Project management experience with superior organizational skills.

About the Opportunity

You will report directly to the Head of Legal for the Americas. You will work closely with all members of the Global Legal team and business leaders throughout the company, but will concentrate on supporting U.S. operations.

The right candidate will have a basic understanding of and enthusiastic belief in the cryptocurrency/digital asset space, 6+ years of experience working for a top law firm, federal or state regulator, or in-house at a fast-paced, brand-name business, and possess strong academic credentials and excellent writing and analytical skills. The ideal candidate should also possess experience working on matters pertaining to money services businesses and their application to cryptocurrency/digital assets, specifically maintaining and acquiring money transmitter licenses and similar licenses in the U.S.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead all legal matters related to the maintenance of money transmitter licenses and other regulatory licenses throughout the U.S., in collaboration with the U.S. Legal, Compliance, and Licensing teams.
  • Conduct legal research into laws and regulations related to money services businesses and cryptocurrency/digital assets. Evaluate the products and services offered by OKX with respect to those laws and provide legal advice on licensing and compliance requirements.
  • Advise on legal and regulatory aspects of the business's strategic initiatives in the U.S.
  • Draft and revise licensing maintenance/application materials and reports to regulators in collaboration with the Compliance and Licensing teams.
  • Meet and communicate with federal and state regulators and other governmental bodies related to the company’s licensing efforts.
  • Collaborate with product and business development teams to achieve company-wide projects and goals.
  • Assist with civil, litigation, and regulatory matters, and supervise outside counsel as needed.
  • Manage additional legal requests from all areas of the business and effectively advise on legal concepts and legal risk with an eye towards the strategic goals of business leaders.

What We Look For In You

  • Active membership with a U.S. state bar (CA or NY preferred), or equivalent.
  • 6+ years of relevant regulatory licensing experience at a top-tier law firm, federal or state regulator, and/or in-house legal team, preferably in a financial services-related industry or other firmly-regulated space.
  • Experience with regulatory reporting obligations related to money transmitter licenses and similar licenses, e.g., call reports, virtual currency permissible investment reporting, license renewals, and regulatory exams.
  • Experience engaging with federal and/or state regulators.
  • Experience managing teams (legal and cross-functional) and driving projects to completion on expedited timelines.
  • Must be highly-driven, proactive, responsive, and precise.
  • Experience making strategic recommendations to senior management and senior legal team members.
  • Enthusiastic about blockchain technology and have an understanding of the relevant legal/regulatory landscape.
  • Comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, growth-stage and multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to effectively advise and build trust with business teams.
  • Project management experience with superior organizational skills.
