Job Description

Tesla's Vehicle Engineering team in Berlin seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer for Exterior Engineering. Responsibilities include concept engineering and feasibility studies, designing exterior systems meeting targets for craftsmanship, function, cost, and weight. This role requires proficiency in CATIA V5 and 3DX, understanding of GD&T, and experience with various manufacturing processes (injection molding, thermoforming, etc.). The engineer will create component specifications, DFMEAs, and interpret CAE simulation results. Collaboration with design studios, suppliers, and production teams is essential. Problem-solving and addressing production issues are key aspects. The ideal candidate possesses a mechanical engineering background or equivalent experience and has demonstrated success managing challenging projects.

Must have:

Mechanical Engineering background
Proficiency in CATIA V5 & 3DX
GD&T understanding
Experience with manufacturing processes
CAE result interpretation
Project management skills

What You’ll Do

Concept engineering and feasibility, incl. packaging and layout within vehicle architecture
Design to deliver customer-driven exterior system targets for craftsmanship, function, cost and weight
Create vehicle-aligned components and develop design concepts and production designs in both CATIA V5 and 3DX, support creation of component specification, component DFMEA and other technical design documents
Interpret CAE simulation results and integrate recommendations into product design
Support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events
Interface with design studio suppliers, process and production for manufacturing, feasibility, validation, and other engineering activities as specified for the assigned commodity
Root-Cause and Corrective analysis for production issues

What You’ll Bring

Education background in mechanical engineering; or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
Proficiency in both CATIA V5 and 3DX, good understanding of GD&T in design engineering
Understand the fundamental differences in design and engineering between low/high volume production, entry/premium vehicle systems and have examples or a portfolio of completed programs
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to integrate state-of-the-art design and manufacturing methods into product concepts and designs, as well as capability to interpret CAE results and integrate recommendations into product designs
Demonstrate an ability to manage difficult projects with tight timing constraints
Experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, thermoforming, SMC, bonding, etc.
Experience in defining test plans, designing test setups, and analyzing data
