Job Description

The Optician I will fabricate optical parts following established procedures. Primary duties include performing High Speed Precision Polishing (HSPP) processes such as cleaning, grinding, polishing, and beveling. This involves using both manual and CNC equipment. The role also involves material handling, safety adherence, paperwork completion, and training/supervising. The candidate must demonstrate expertise in grinding and possess basic knowledge in other fabrication areas. The role requires the ability to calculate figures, interpret documents, and apply common sense to solve problems. They should proactively identify potential problems and help meet customer deliveries and company objectives.
Must have:
  • Perform High Speed Precision Polishing (HSPP) fabrication processes.
  • Grind/polish aspherical/spherical parts to tight tolerances.
  • Use calibrated interferometers to measure surface irregularity.
  • Follow proper material handling and safety procedures.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and record data manually.

Job Details

Under minimum supervision, the Optician will fabricate optical parts following established procedures utilizing one or more standard processes.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Hands-on Optical Fabrication – 75%
    • Performs all the following High Speed Precision Polishing (HSPP) fabrication processes: cleaning, generating, grinding, polishing, beveling, and blocking using manual and CNC equipment/processes
    • Be able to grind/polish aspherical/spherical parts to tight tolerances
    • Learn machine operation and set ups as well to be able to support multiple functions/operation
    • Able to use calibrated interferometers to measure surface irregularity
    • Maintain production process equipment using standard operating procedures

 

  • Material Handling & Safety – 5%
    • Follow proper material handling procedures for each material used
    • Follow proper safety rules and precautions, policies and procedures specific to fabrication processes, including the use of protective apparel

 

  • Paperwork & Record Keeping – 5%
    • Complete necessary paperwork and record data manually

 

  • Training & supervise – 5%
    • Have clarification of objectives, participation, communication and an active willingness to help your peers, technicians, process engineers and supervisors to meet customer deliveries and company objectives
    • Help management to promote teamwork participation

 

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must demonstrate expertise in grinding area and have basic knowledge in one other area of the fabrication processes, possess 1+ years of related experience or education

 

Skills

  • Mathematical Skills
    • Ability to calculate figures and perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions.   
    • Ability to use a scientific calculator and perform basic calculations.
  • Language Skills
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
    • Ability to communicate in English and speak effectively before small groups of employees in the organization.
  • Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. 
    • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. 
    • Ability to anticipate problems and proactively identify potential problems.

 

Working Conditions

Regularly required to:

  • Sit, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms
  • Demonstrate a high level of manual dexterity and care when handling delicate parts

Frequently required to:

  • Talk and hear
  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and/or move:

  • Up to 10 pounds frequently
  • Up to 50 pounds occasionally, with or without assistance

Vision requirements include:

  • Close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to inspect parts using an eye loupe and read small graduations on a micrometer and depth gauge
  • Must be able to wear safety gear for extended periods of time

 

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. Corporate EHS standards.
