The Sourcing Engineer at Microsoft's Cloud Operations + Innovations (CO+I) organization will support power interconnection and energy supply agreements, evaluating energy markets and regulations. Responsibilities include financial analysis for cost-effective power agreements, negotiation of energy supply contracts and interconnection processes, and preparing business authorization documentation. This role requires cross-functional collaboration with finance, legal, engineering, and construction teams and supports data center energy initiatives in the US and Latin America. The position is crucial for optimizing power costs and aligning with Microsoft's sustainability goals.
Must have:

As part of the Cloud Operations + Innovations (CO+I) organization, the Energy Markets team supports datacenter interconnection and energy supply contracts with utilities and third-party suppliers. Moreover, the team leads regulatory and policy strategy development with utilities, regulators, and stakeholders important to datacenter and clean energy infrastructure delivery. All of this is done in support of Microsoft’s long-term 100/100/0 vision – that on all the world’s grids, 100 percent of electrons, 100 percent of the time are generated from zero carbon sources. 

 

As a Sourcing Engineer, you will support activities to execute power interconnection and energy supply agreements. You will also lead the evaluation of energy markets, electric power rates, tariffs, and regulations or policies critical to power delivery and sustainability. And you will develop and provide financial analytics to support business reviews and recommendations on cost effective power agreements to CO+I leadership.  
 
A successful candidate will thrive working cross functionally with Finance, Legal, Engineering, Construction, and other business stakeholders that are essential to successful project execution. This role will support our Data Center Energy Markets teams in the United States and Latin America.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree (or currently pursuing) AND 2+ year(s) work or internship experience in energy, procurement, supply chain, sourcing, and or engineering operations.
  • Business level fluency to read, write and speak Spanish or Portuguese.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with electric power utilities in the United States and/or Latin America, with large consumers, or in energy markets.
  • Experience of negotiation of energy supply contracts and agreements and interconnection to the grid.

 

Sourcing Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Model and analyze energy supply agreements, electric power markets, and financial forecasts needed to support power sourcing strategies in the United States to ensure optimized power costs, and support regular business reporting to finance, legal, and other infrastructure, planning and acquisition teams.
  • Support the negotiation of energy supply agreements and electric tariffs to secure power infrastructure while also delivering on Microsoft’s sustainability commitments.
  • Support the preparation and negotiation of grid interconnection processes and agreements.
  • Support and develop business authorization documentation for CO + I leadership to secure Finance, Legal, and other cross-functional team support on data center energy infrastructure contracts and delivery strategies.
  • Support data center energy initiatives through due diligence and internal business reviews.
  • Route, track, review, and monitor key contracts, agreements, and other instruments needed to support our energy strategy.
