Job Description

Tesla seeks a Controls Engineer for its General Assembly team at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg. Responsibilities include designing, building, and maintaining automation and robotic equipment. This involves PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff), industrial robot programming (Kuka, Fanuc), servo/VFD tuning, safety system implementation, HMI/SCADA dashboard creation (Ignition), equipment upgrades, process optimization, troubleshooting, and documentation. The role also includes interfacing equipment with Tesla's MES and databases using Python and SQL, and developing equipment validation procedures. The ideal candidate will have a BS in engineering and 5+ years of relevant experience.

What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a Controls Engineer for General assembly team to be part of a world-class team of engineers responsible for designing, building and sustaining the automation and robotic equipment at the Tesla factories. As a Controls Engineer, you are responsible for implementing equipment controls solutions projects. This includes implementation of automated equipment such as conveyance, robotics, test equipment, vision inspection, etc. Controls Engineers own the design, programming, commissioning and review process of the project as well as additional functions such as auditing, installation and safety assessment.
Collaborate with support functions try to the best to solve all those problems beforehand, so that the implementation of the new equipment in time, on cost, in quality.

What You’ll Do
  • Program ladder logic, ST and SCL on multiple PLC controller platforms (Allen-Bradley, Siemens and Beckhoff)
  • Install, Program and teach industrial 6-axis robots (Kuka and Fanuc) Sequence complex, multi-station machinery for material pick-and-place, dispense, fastening, welding and conveyance applications
  • Set up, tune and optimize servo drives and VFDs for fast and smooth operation (Siemens, SEW, Beckhoff)
  • Implement control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment as per local codes and standards (DIN, VDE, ISO, IEC, etc.)
  • Understand Tesla controls standards, work with suppliers during specification, design review, design approval, buyoff, installation
  • Create HMI and SCADA dashboards screens using Ignition
  • Lead equipment upgrades with a focus on serviceability, reliability and process capability.
  • Responsible for continuous process optimization of automated lines. Become owner / subject matter expert to drive equipment-related process improvement and innovation, including detailed hands-on troubleshooting with maintenance and root cause analysis
  • Build training material, spare part lists, maintenance routines, service bulletins, and related documentation related to cradle to grave equipment life cycle management
  • Interface process and test equipment with Tesla MES and production quality databases using Python scripting and SQL Develop and improve equipment validation procedures including calibration and qualification
  • Familiarity with SPC and development of equipment-related OCAP
What You’ll Bring
  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Computer Engineering or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in Controls engineering
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Advanced Fanuc robot and Siemens controls programming skills
  • Able to work under intense time pressure in the presence others
  • Flexible schedule to work according to project needs

Electrical design experience (EPLAN)
• Understanding of databases and various program languages (Java, Python)
