The Microsoft Defender Engineering team seeks a Software Engineering IC3 to build cloud solutions for a massive user base. This role involves developing and supporting services, focusing on optimizing the dev-test-release process and securing the developer ecosystem from supply-chain attacks. Responsibilities include defining design patterns, driving efficiencies, identifying and reducing issues through software solutions, and mentoring junior engineers. The successful candidate will collaborate across teams, ensuring highly stable and performant services. The position requires significant development experience in C#, Python, or Java, along with expertise in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and CI/CD tools.

Overview

Are you interested in working for one of the most exciting and fast-growing teams in Microsoft? Then look at the Microsoft Defender Engineering team. You will be building cloud solutions in order to meet scales that few companies in the industry are required to support. Leveraging state of the art technologies, you will be instrumental in delivering holistic protection to a user base of tens of thousands of government organizations, enterprises, and SMB businesses around the globe. The Microsoft Threat Protection team is responsible for delivering a constantly evolving set of services and solutions to meet the challenging landscape of our ever-evolving attackers.  

This is an Engineering Systems team which provides leadership, direction, and accountability for developer tools and platforms, CICD, engineering infrastructure, and secured development standards. You will help develop solutions that optimize dev-test-release process with focus on securing entire developer eco-system from supply-chain attacks and operate our production services. Strong collaboration skills will be required to work closely with other engineering teams to ensure services and systems are highly stable, performant, and meet the expectations of internal and external customers and users.

Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications:  

  • Significant development experience using common object-oriented or functional languages such as C#, Python, or Java
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP
  • Strong hands-on understanding and experience with CI\CD tools, practices and source control 
  • 4+ years of a mix of coding/testing/Integration experience 
  • Proven experience with building and supporting services, including logging, monitoring, alerting, and measuring reliability and availability. 
  • Ability to thrive with the ambiguity associated with working in a fast-paced and changing environment.  
  • Exceptional Leadership skills: Sound problem resolution, judgment, negotiating and decision-making skills. 
  • Support a 24x7 live site support model for the services the team owns. 

  

Preferred Experiences and Technologies:  

    • Azure DevOps and GitHub tooling  
    • Understanding of Kubernetes administration
    • Hands-on scripting knowledge in Powershell
    • Platform development experience for sandboxed environments
    • Azure Data Explorer, Azure Data Lake, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Batch, HDI, Spark, Azure Synapse 
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Software Engineers, Program Managers, Security Researchers, and Data Scientists 
    • Development experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure 
    • Qualifications: Other Requirements –

      Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings:

      • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

 

 

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer II, you would be responsible for:

  • Defining well thought out design patterns and code with an emphasis on quality, simplicity, maintainability, and performance Engineering systems.
  • Driving efficiencies through software improvement and root cause analysis resulting in service delivery, maturity, and scalability.
  • Proactively identifying and reducing issues through design, testing, and implementation of software-based solutions 
  • Identify opportunities and drive the design and implementation of end-to-end telemetry, alerting, self-healing, and automation capabilities to improve service health, manageability, and reliability.
  • Mentor junior engineers on coding and design best practices.

You will be responsible for working with various disciplines; to address customers’ needs and create new scenarios and features that provide customer value.
