Job Description

The Data Center Facilities Technician II, Mechanical role involves operating, monitoring, and supporting physical facilities at Google data centers. Responsibilities include maintaining HVAC systems, power supplies, generators, and electrical distribution. Technicians inspect, repair, and troubleshoot various systems, assist senior technicians, read blueprints, and ensure adherence to safety standards. They also contribute to cost reduction and efficiency improvement initiatives, managing performance issues and outages to minimize downtime. The role requires experience with mechanical maintenance, including fire and safety systems, pumps, tanks, piping, elevators, and cooling systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in critical large-scale facilities and knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and control systems. Shift work and non-standard hours are required.
Must have:
  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience
  • 2 years experience in mechanical/HVAC
  • Experience with pumps, tanks, piping, HVAC
  • Ability to lift 50lbs, work at heights
  • Troubleshooting and repair skills
  • Knowledge of safety standards
Good to have:
  • Data center experience
  • UPS, generator, electrical distribution knowledge
  • Experience with control systems programming
  • Blueprint reading skills

Job Details

Minimum qualifications:

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, other verifiable training in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of Electrical, Mechanical/HVAC, or Controls/Automation experience in an industrial/commercial environment.
  • Experience with mechanical maintenance, including Fire and Safety Systems, Buildings Infrastructure, Pumps, Tanks, Piping, Elevators, and Cooling Systems (e.g., HVAC equipment, Chillers, Cooling Towers).
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of equipment, work on platforms, ladders, and under raised floors.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and work rotations/shifts.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience in maintenance of mechanical/cooling distribution systems or construction/technical environment or a related field.
  • Experience in mechanical maintenance of critical large-scale facilities (e.g., Data Centers, Pharma/Medical/Electrical installations) including maintenance of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, generators, and associated devices.
  • Experience in data centers, hospitals, power plants, or laboratories.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and controls systems including Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, Chillers, or commercial Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours including, shift-based schedules, weekends, and holidays.

About the job

The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and HVAC systems in the world. Facilities Technicians at Google data centers operate, monitor and support physical facilities conditions. Some of these duties will include heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution and control and monitoring systems. You regularly help inspect, maintain and repair various data center systems such as piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components). You provide daily assistance to senior technicians as you read blueprints/schematics, conduct tours of systems and assess their working order.

As an advocate for best practices, you develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. You ensure that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems and making repairs quickly. In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize the recovery time from failures.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor multiple information streams in the control room and make accurate mission-critical decisions.
  • Be responsible for the uptime, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various data center systems such as pumps, Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC), control and monitoring systems, stand-by power generation, and electrical distribution.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in the data center facilities systems and equipment.
  • Lead the execution of controls system programming, start-up, commissioning, documentation, and full facilities turnover on assigned projects.
  • Follow the site’s environmental health and safety policies.
