The New York Times Magazine is seeking a Deputy Photo Editor to oversee innovative and impactful photography for its photo department. The role involves conceptualizing, assigning, and producing visual journalism for both print and digital platforms. Key responsibilities include implementing visual goals, managing department operations and workflows, collaborating with photographers globally, seeking out new talent, and ensuring high-quality visual curation. The Deputy Photo Editor will also manage photography contest submissions, license imagery from archives, and support the company's mission of independent journalism. This position requires strong news judgment, sophisticated visual taste, adaptability, and expertise in electronic image handling and related software.
Must have:
  • 10+ years experience in visual curation at a magazine.
  • 3+ years experience managing visual teams.
  • Experience collaborating with and guiding photographers.
  • Knowledge of all photographic genres and strong news judgment.
  • Expertise in digital tools, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic.
  • Proficiency in image handling software and learning new technology.

  • Experience in off-platform visual strategy.

The New York Times Magazine is looking for a Deputy Photo Editor to manage innovative, and high impact photography for the magazine's photo department. You will have experience conceptualizing, assigning and producing excellent visual journalism across print and digital platforms. Impeccable news judgment, sophisticated visual taste, and adaptability in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment are required.

The Deputy Photo Editor will work with the Director of Photography to implement the visual goals of the magazine and engage in operations and systems management to keep the department processes running smoothly. You are comfortable leading and building processes and efficient workflows, maintaining critical operations and managing other staff in the process.

You are familiar with a range of photographic genres across the art and photography worlds, and can function between assigning and collaborating with photographers around the world. Seeking out talent is a necessary part of this role. You will have experience in producing ambitious visual journalism, with a track record integrating both photography and video, and have extensive experience working with photojournalists in the field.

Expertise in electronic image handling is essential. You should have exceptional technical skills, including proficiency in image handling software, and a facility for learning new technology. Experience in video production and editing is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Initiate and ensure the development of visual ideas for special issues, covers, photo essays, feature stories, and columns.
  • Help manage the department's operations, budget and contracts, and fill in for the director as needed.
  • Commission, edit and publish images across platforms, including mobile, print and social.
  • Be a primary point of contact for the photo department in the weekly production of the print magazine, maintaining a high quality of visual curation and meeting all necessary deadlines.
  • Collaborate with photographers, writers, editors, and designers
  • Manage all photography contest submissions and deadlines.
  • Research and license high quality imagery from archives and stock agencies
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Director of Photography.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years experience at a magazine or equivalent in a visual curation role
  • 3+ years of experience managing visual teams 
  • Experience collaborating with and guiding photographers, both in studio and the field 
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for all photographic genres, and exceptional news judgment
  • Expertise in digital tools and programs, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in overseeing video and multimedia projects
  • Experience in off platform visual strategy
  • Outstanding organizational, communication and collaborative abilities
