Your new role
WBD DTC’s Content Discovery Experience Services team is seeking an experienced and talented full-stack Staff Software Engineer. As a Staff Software Engineer within our Experience Service Tools team, you will play a pivotal role in designing, crafting, and implementing reusable and globally scalable automation testing strategies, frameworks, and tools to ensure our internal tools and experience services are of the highest quality in order to enable our internal users to create, build, and curate dynamic DTC content experiences and to efficiently power our DTC streaming apps.
Your primary focus will be on setting and delivering high fidelity automation testing strategies and frameworks for our content discovery services and tools management of our DTC streaming apps including editorial tools and services that power the video and content experiences for millions of users globally. You will collaborate closely with a highly skilled group of back-end and front-end engineers to build the testing strategies and foundations for our WBD global experience tools and platforms and enhance and test feature support across various products and expansions.
The ideal candidate has a track record of having built multiple stable, scalable, and reliable automated testing suites that have been running successfully in production environments and provide extensive quality benefits multiple high-performance, stable, scalable systems that have been successfully shipped to customers in production. Your work and your approach to work are exemplary: you drive best practices and set standards for your team. You are a collaborative leader that makes other engineers and team members around you more productive, by sharing your knowledge, and helping to tie-break key technical decisions. You have the ability to think like a product lead who builds tools and distributed services that cater to the needs of our internal partners (editorial and merchandising, personalization, search, and content discovery engineering and feature teams) with an eye for automation, efficiency, and scale. You have a deep empathy for both internal stakeholders and external customers which rely on and extensively use the tools and services you build and support. You provide mentoring to other engineers.
Responsibilities
Develop automated tests and tooling with an aim to validate software quality against product requirements and industry standards using automation.
Lead project(s) and phases of testing cycles from planning, test development, and execution through deployment, ensuring the application meets quality standards.
Contribute to design, develop, and maintain test automation frameworks, tools, and strategies for comprehensive test coverage.
Design, implement, and maintain services that drive WBD DTC editorial and experience internal tools for editorial and merchandising, personalization, search, and content discovery feature teams.
You work closely with technical leadership and play a leading role in designing and developing major functional changes to existing software systems, or new ones, involving yourself and other engineers. You make good decisions when to build new and when to extend existing. You are known for your subject matter expertise.
Your work and your approach to work are exemplary: you drive best practices and set standards for your team. You can propose and create best practices proactively where none exists.
You write high quality, maintainable, and robust code. You have experience in more than one backend and frontend language and understand the fundamentals of software engineering well enough to learn new languages and frameworks when the need arises.
You understand a broad range of testing frameworks, data structures, API and system designs, and frontend frameworks and know how, when and when not to use them. You think like an experienced QA engineer and architect and can evaluate run-time performance and system design and understand how to trade off performance and efficiency using a variety of architectural and data structure approaches.
You are comfortable advising others through code reviews, design reviews, and feedback on operational excellence. You are also comfortable receiving feedback and using it to grow as an engineer. You recognize that good ideas can come from anywhere, and work to make all your peers feel included and heard. You deliver facts and decisions with empathy and transparency to bring others along with you.
You are a key influencer in your team’s strategy and contribute significantly to team planning. You show good judgment in making trade-offs between immediate and long-term business needs. You are a collaborative technical leader that makes other engineers and team members around you more productive, by sharing your knowledge, and helping to tie-break key technical decisions. You provide mentoring to other engineers and your success is judged as much on your own productivity as on the positive impact you have on engineers around you.
You can troubleshoot a production issue by reviewing source code, logs, operational metrics, stack trace, etc. to pinpoint a specific problem and then resolve it. You can identify root causes and identify learnings to improve both development processes and system design.
You prioritize scalability, extensibility, reliability, and high performance in the development of the services and tools.
You collaborate across multiple backend and frontend teams to ensure cohesive and efficient system development and architecture design.
You contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and engineering excellence.
Requirements
9+ years of experience developing scalable automation testing frameworks, tools, and strategies.
Experience in developing full-stack solutions in Java and JavaScript with proficiency in Java development frameworks, including but not limited to Vert.x and Spring Boot and contemporary JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Angular, React, jQuery). Experience with NodeJS, Python are a plus.
Experience in backend and frontend software development, building micro services, event driven architectures/solutions.
Strong knowledge and experience in multiple test types including unit, functional, integration, API, load and performance tests.
Experience in private and public API design and cross-service integrations.
Demonstrated ability to use common industry tools for software development including but not limited to IDEs, build and continuous integration, source control management, code review tools, data storage services, and cloud infrastructure, and you are able to build software in a professional team environment delivered to production using these tools.
Experience with software engineering best practices (e.g., unit testing, design patterns, building maintainable code, performance)
Familiarity with a range of database technologies, encompassing both SQL and NoSQL options.
Usage and deep understanding of Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS services
Experience building, operating, and owning services. Implementing operational excellence mechanisms including alerting, metrics, and logging using Prometheus, CloudWatch, Kibana, PagerDuty
DevOps experience (AWS preferred) architecting, configuring cloud technology stacks (Network Security, API Gateways, VPCs, CDNs, Kafka/MKS, Kubernetes, EKS, Jenkins configuration, CI/CD configurations etc., is a plus.
Ability to work with minimal instructions on day-to-day work, able to consume and self-start with general instructions on new assignments. Participates in an inclusive and supportive engineering culture.
