Job Description Summary:

What you need to know about the role-

PayPal’s Legal Team is looking for an experienced and dynamic attorney with arbitration and litigation experience to join its Litigation Team. You will act as lead counsel directly representing PayPal in court and arbitration proceedings. This position will be a hybrid role and will require some in office attendance in accordance with PayPal’s policies.

Meet our team

PayPal is looking for a highly skilled attorney with experience handling disputes, arbitrations and litigation to join its Litigation Team. In this role, you will also work closely with fellow members of PayPal’s Litigation Team, and internal stakeholders to handle all PayPal’s arbitration docket from initial dispute communications to the initiation of proceedings to final resolution.

  • Specialized in American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) arbitration cases and represent PayPal through all phases of arbitration proceedings.
  • Engage in all aspects of litigation matters representing PayPal in court and arbitration proceedings.  This is an exciting opportunity to directly try cases as in house counsel, owning the matter from inception to conclusion.  
  • Strong understanding of arbitration rules, procedures, and practices, as well as excellent negotiation and litigation skills.
  • Responsible for tracking and reporting key metrics related to your representation of PayPal in these matters.

Your day to day

In your day to day role you will...

  • Case Management: Represent PayPal in arbitration and litigation in North America on assigned matters from the dispute stage, through arbitration including research, pre-litigation communications, pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, conferences, mediations, trials, and appeals. Execute arbitration strategies to ensure PayPal’s interests are represented effectively and efficiently. Report to senior leadership and communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Client Representation: Develop a strong rapport and working relationship with legal team members and business counterparts across PayPal to help drive the delivery of best-in-class legal services. Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements to assist the litigation team and others in the company to increase efficiency and maximize the use of resources.
  • Legal Research and Analysis: Review and analyze customer agreements and website content to identify and mitigate potential risk. Advise internal stakeholders on trends and changes in relevant statutes and regulations.  Recommend strategies regarding pending proceedings and to mitigate future disputes.
  • Strategic Planning and Collaboration: Manage and leverage data to drive decisions on litigation management and report on risks facing the company. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure cohesive and effective representation of customer disputes.   

What do you need to bring-

  • Education: Juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • License: Admission to the bar in at least one jurisdiction.
  • Experience: This is an experienced attorney role requiring a demonstrated proficiency and experience in all aspects of arbitration and litigation management. This fast-paced position is suited to a self-starter who has the experience to quickly take ownership of a caseload of complex arbitration matters. Demonstrated knowledge of effective management of arbitration and litigation. Experience coordinating and responding to discovery requests. Prior experience in the financial services industry is preferred. Familiarity with, and strong interest in, PayPal, mobile payments, emerging payment technology, and the payments industry.
  • Skills: Ability to quickly assess the legal exposure and provide concise legal advice to internal stakeholders. Good project manager who can bring various constituencies and stakeholders together to complete projects timely and efficiently. Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills. Skilled oral and written communicator. Effective at negotiating and resolving disputes with customers.
  • Knowledge: Arbitration or trial experience at a law firm or in-house legal department handling commercial and consumer litigation. Experience handling cases involving claims arising out of the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, Unfair Deceptive or Abusive Acts and Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and state and/or federal claims applicable to the financial services industry.
  • Qualities: Strong interpersonal skills and a proactive mindset. Ability to effectively influence, lead, collaborate with, and encourage others at all levels with an inclusive and collaborative team culture. Team player who is comfortable with a dynamic and changing environment that emphasizes collaboration. Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances. Ability to manage numerous projects and cases simultaneously under tight deadlines. Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to keep and maintain clear, accurate, and concise records.

The U.S. national annual pay range for this role is

$82500 to $187990
