CloudLinux is seeking a Principal Software Engineer with extensive C/C++ experience to join their Apache2Nginx team. You will play a key role in developing a high-performance NGINX-based architecture that surpasses competitors. Responsibilities include optimizing NGINX, Handlers, and WAF configurations, implementing PHP handlers, and developing custom modules. You will also conduct performance analysis and contribute to the overall development of the product.
Must have:
  • 8+ years of experience in software development
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++
  • Extensive experience in building server-side applications
  • Deep knowledge of Web Application Firewalls (WAF)
  • Hands-on experience with Linux (CentOS, Debian)
  • Understanding of web server architecture (Nginx, Apache)

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer who will join our Apache2Nginx product, a cutting-edge solution that automatically converts .htaccess files to NGINX configuration, streamlining the transition and enhancing performance. As we explore various combinations of Apache, Handlers, and WAF solutions, our primary goal is to develop an NGINX-based architecture that outperforms market competitors. We are focused on researching and implementing the most effective WAF engines, including ModSecurity and Coraza.

Main Goals:

  • Create a combination of NGINX, Handlers, and WAF that surpasses the performance of existing market competitors.
  • Investigate various WAF engines, including ModSecurity and Coraza, to determine the best fit for our architecture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify the optimal order of component usage (NGINX, WAF, etc.) to achieve maximum performance; fine-tune NGINX, Handlers, and WAF.
  • Improve various PHP handlers in the context of web request performance; develop and optimize NGINX and WAF modules, with the possibility of creating a custom C module for NGINX.
  • Conduct comparative performance analysis against existing market competitors and other solutions to validate improvements.
  • Architect, implement and oversee server-side solutions utilizing Linux networking technologies with a strong emphasis on optimization.
  • Lead the development of high-quality software products, ensuring adherence to coding standards and Agile methodologies.
  • Drive collaboration among development teams, testers, and stakeholders to achieve sprint objectives, providing guidance on technical priorities.
  • Provide accurate estimations of project effort during sprint planning, evaluate open-source alternatives, and offer strategic recommendations.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive unit tests for critical software components to uphold code quality and reliability.
  • Champion process improvements, including coding practices, standards, and tooling, to enhance team productivity and efficiency.
  • Demonstrate proactive leadership in task prioritization, focusing on value delivery and meeting project deadlines.
  • Facilitate design and peer code reviews, offering expert insights and constructive feedback to foster a culture of excellence.
  • Conduct thorough technical root cause analysis and debugging to effectively address software defects and operational challenges.
  • Foster continuous self-improvement among team members, promoting the development of technical and communication skills.

Requirements

To thrive in this role, we are looking for someone who has:

  • 8 years of progressive experience in software development, with a strong proficiency in C/C++.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in building server-side applications and services using C/C++, coupled with expertise in performance tuning.
  • Deep knowledge of various Web Application Firewall (WAF) implementations and experience working with them.
  • Hands-on experience in Linux (experience with popular distributions such as CentOS and Debian).
  • A deep understanding of web server architecture, designing and building modules for Nginx and/or Apache is highly desirable.
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing robust server-side solutions, web servers preferably.  
  • Deep knowledge and practical experience in network-based solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience with Python, Bash, C, and SQL.
