Job Description

Epic Games' MetaHuman team seeks a Research Engineer in neural rendering. The role involves developing and applying algorithms in neural rendering, differentiable rendering, and image-to-image translation to create next-generation digital humans. Responsibilities include working with researchers, artists, and engineers on the character creation process (scanning, performance capture, animation, rendering), identifying process bottlenecks, researching automation techniques, developing prototypes for novel human capture and rendering, and staying current on neural rendering research. The ideal candidate possesses experience in computer graphics, computer vision, geometry processing, machine learning, and proficiency in Python and C++ with PyTorch or similar frameworks. Access to cutting-edge 3D scanning technology is a key advantage.
Must have:
  • Experience with computer graphics and computer vision

What You'll Do

The MetaHuman team at Epic Games is looking for a research engineer in the field of neural rendering. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for digital humans and experience in the fields of computer graphics, computer vision, geometry processing, and machine learning. You will develop and apply algorithms in the domain of neural rendering, differentiable rendering, and image-to-image translation to build and render the next generation of digital humans. We have developed one of the world's best face and body 3D and 4D scanners and have the team and toolsets for creating extremely precise datasets. In this role, you will

  • Be part of the MetaHuman R&D team proving out new technologies to raise the bar of real-time digital humans and characters in Unreal Engine
  • Work directly with a team of researchers, artists, and engineers to learn all aspects of the character creation process from scanning and performance capture to animation and rendering
  • Help identify points of friction in our processes and research new techniques to automate and improve the realism of the art team's work
  • Research and develop prototypes to prove brand-new approaches for capturing and rendering digital humans
  • Stay well-informed on the latest research on neural rendering and digital character technologies

What we're looking for

  • Experience with computer graphics and computer vision techniques
  • Understanding of mathematical optimization and modern machine learning concepts
  • Experience with neural/differentiable rendering techniques and/or image-to-image translation
  • MSC/Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent
  • Strong programming skills in Python and C++ and Experience with PyTorch or similar machine learning frameworks
