Job Summary:

Rock Paper Shotgun (RPS) is looking to expand its reviews capability. Long a leader in PC focused news, reviews and features, RPS is now aiming to increase the quality, quantity and reach of its reviews content.

As Reviews Editor, you will work closely with our staff writers, the Editorial Director, and our award-winning team to build the best original PC games reviews on the internet. As well as writing reviews yourself, you'll help set our content strategy for the section, selecting the right games, approaches, editorial angles, and work with our extensive freelance pool. You will make sure our reviews are in tune with the editorial voice of RPS, and ensure they meet the highest standards of being informative while also engaging and entertaining.

You will manage our reviews scheduling and output, and our freelance budget, making sure the team's time is always well spent. You'll get your hands on the latest releases and learn them inside and out, tearing them down to give readers everything they need to enjoy them to the fullest. And you'll have an opportunity to add your own voice to one of the most respected editorial teams in the business.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Editor to select the right target games, and the best approaches, structure, and content priorities for our reviews.
  • Coordinate the production and publishing schedule to make sure the team's time is well spent and our reviews are as complete as possible, as early as possible.
  • Manage the Guides Writer's time and professional development, and oversee a freelance budget, working with external writers when necessary.
  • Ensure our reviews are structured for search engine optimisation (SEO) as well as clarity and usability for readers. Monitor their performance and adjust content where necessary to ensure they reach the broadest audience possible.
  • Work with our international network to develop standard processes for SEO, and share this expertise with the rest of the Rock, Paper, Shotgun editorial team.
  • Play major video game releases across many popular genres and deliver comprehensive, accurate, clear and concisely written reviews under time pressure, ensuring they meet our editorial standards.
  • Edit reviews copy written by others for accuracy, clarity and structure.
  • Learn our content management system (CMS) and use it to prepare your own and others' guide content for publication.
Job Qualifications:
The Must-Haves:
  • Superb writing style, with an emphasis on clarity and economy, but also an appealing tone.
  • Ability to edit other writers' copy to the highest standards of accuracy while under time pressure. Great attention to detail.
  • Extensive knowledge of video games across a wide range of genres, with a particular focus on the highest-profile contemporary releases.
  • A good practical understanding of video game design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive; strong organisational skills and a methodical approach.
  • Positive attitude and a team mentality.
  • Passion for video games and gaming culture.

Not Required, but Nice to Have:

  • A sound understanding of search engine optimisation.
  • Degree in a relevant subject, especially Journalism, English or a related media subject.
  • General familiarity with the web publishing environment.
  • Experience of managing other staff.
  • Knowledge of the games industry itself, with contacts or a clear interest in the sector.
  • An interest in the technology, entertainment and lifestyle sectors in general.
Work Environment:
  • Work Schedule: Standard full-time working schedule, M-F. There is no expectation for this role to work weekends, holidays, or odd hours.
  • Travel Requirements: On occasion, there could be a requirement for this role to travel to conferences or events for content coverage.
  • Physical Requirements: This role involves typical office and computer-based activities, including prolonged periods of sitting or standing and frequent use of hands, fingers, and vision for tasks such as operating a computer, mouse, and keyboard. Occasional travel is required, which could include lifting and carrying materials, and navigating airports, hotels, and other venues.
  • Work Model: For applicants who reside in or around London, there may be a requirement to go into our offices 2-3 days per week. For others located in different areas around the UK, this position will be remote.
