Paradox Interactive is seeking a Senior Game Designer for its flagship title, Hearts of Iron. This role requires significant experience in system and gameplay design within the grand strategy genre, specifically with Paradox Development Studio (PDS) games. Responsibilities include owning the design process from research and documentation to implementation and balancing, working collaboratively with other teams, and engaging directly with the Hearts of Iron community. The successful candidate will actively participate in showcasing new features to players and collaborating with the marketing department. A deep understanding of grand strategy game design principles and a passion for historical narratives are crucial.
Must have:
  • Solid system design experience
  • Proven gameplay design experience
  • Scripting experience
  • Strategy/war game interest (PDS games)
  • Fluency in English
  • Collaboration & communication skills
Good to have:
  • Keen interest in history

Job Details

As a Game Designer you will be focusing on designing and balancing engaging gameplay mechanics. Hearts of Iron, the grand strategy wargame, have over a million players monthly (and growing) expectantly waiting for what’s next for their favorite franchise.

A keen interest in history and its narratives is a great plus.

Your mission

You will be working closely with the Game Director and be the owner of the design in feature teams. Taking ownership of the designs means that you will be working hands-on from research, to design, implementation and balancing of gameplay systems. This includes being adept at communicating with your peers and colleagues in other disciplines, writing and maintaining design documents as well as testing implemented features and making sure they live up to expectations.

Your role goes beyond crafting engaging game play - it involves actively engaging with our community, giving sneak peaks of yours & the team's latest for work as well as working closely with our marketing team to come up with the best way to showcase the game. In doing this you will be central to shaping the interaction with the people that matters most to us - our players.

Skills that we are looking for
  • Solid work experience in system design

  • Solid work experience in gameplay design

  • Experience with scripting

  • Interest in strategy/war games; PDS games in particular

  • Fluency in English

As a creative force at Paradox, you are expected to have a genuine passion for Grand Strategy Games and a good understanding of what makes them so appealing to our players.
