Blind Squirrel Games seeks a passionate Systems Designer to design balanced game systems, economies, and progression. Collaborating with the combat team, you'll create engaging player choices. Responsibilities include designing rules and parameters for game features, implementing and balancing systems, creating design documentation (docs, diagrams, flowcharts), iterating based on feedback, and mentoring junior designers. The role requires 4+ years of game development experience, shipped titles, scripting proficiency (Unreal Blueprints, Frostbite, etc.), strong communication skills, and a passion for game development.

Systems Designer, Austin, TX 
  
Blind Squirrel Games (BSG) is a proud, independent studio that joins forces with developers and publishers seeking an innovative partner in creating quality games. This is a full-time hybrid position based in Austin, TX, with an onsite requirement of three days per week. 
  
The salary range being considered for this role is $70,000-$85,000. The specified salary range pertains to Southern California, and the actual amounts may differ based on experience, performance, and location. These salary ranges do not apply to locations outside the United States. 
  
Systems Designer at BSG… 
  
Blind Squirrel Games is looking for a passionate Systems Designer to join our team full-time. In this role, you will be responsible for designing balanced game systems, economies, and progression, while also collaborating with the combat team to create engaging and compelling player choices.  
  
Role and Responsibilities 
  • Collaborate with an extremely talented team to create addictive, compelling player experiences 
  • Design rules and parameters for simple, but deep features and systems 
  • Design, implement, tune, and balance game systems, economies, and progression 
  • Create design docs, drawings, diagrams, flowcharts, and any other necessary documents to communicate design functionality and vision 
  • Continually iterate, balance and tune features and gameplay based on feedback from the game teams, user testing and the broader player community 
  • Ability to take direction and critique to learn, grow and improve levels 
  • Mentor less-experienced designers in good practices   
  
Qualifications and Education Requirements 
  
  • 4+ years in game development 
  • Shipped 1 or more titles in a similar capacity 
  • Scripting proficiency in current development tools (Unreal Blueprints, Frostbite etc.) 
  • Ability to write complex correspondence and communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external customers in English. 
      
Preferred Skills 
  
  • Shipped 1 or more AAA titles 
  • Experienced in other areas of game design, such as combat. 
  • C#, Lua or similar scripting experience 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills 
  • Knowledge and understanding of game design fundamentals 
  • Passion about games and game development 
  • Understanding of design affordances 
  • Experienced in single player and multiplayer level design 
  • Organized and attention to details
