Job Description

The Site Electrical Engineer will serve as the on-site representative for the construction of a multi-year datacenter campus. Responsibilities include regular site walks and inspections, reviewing construction against design intent, ensuring quality standards, flagging potential issues, collaborating with Microsoft personnel, reviewing drawings and specifications, supporting submittal reviews and commissioning activities, and ensuring timely project execution. A strong understanding of commercial/industrial architecture and engineering, with a focus on datacenter design and construction techniques, is essential. The role requires strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud.  Within CO&I, the Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience

    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years’ experience specific to datacenter electrical engineering or other comparable experience (healthcare, enterprise, large retail, critical environments, government etc.)
  • 5+ years’ experience reviewing construction drawings, project specifications, and equipment submittals against construction activities to track progress and review potential issues.
  • 5+ years’ experience designing and operating of electrical systems, power distribution systems, backup power systems, electrical power monitoring systems, the control diagrams, sequence of operation for the electrical controls systems, overall network architecture and communication protocols.

Other Requirements: 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  

  

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of electrical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of electrical engineering experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with mission critical or high-tech industry projects.
  • Registered Professional Electrical Engineer.

Electrical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the on-site electrical engineering and project management representative throughout construction of a multi-year datacenter campus development.
  • Perform regular site walks and site inspections to observe progress, review construction vs design intent, review all benchmarking to ensure standard and quality are met, and flag potential concerns for engineering review.
  • Facilitate and participate in a close working relationship with all MSFT site personnel – attending construction-based quality and assurance meetings, attend schedule and milestone review sessions, close monitoring of overall project management, Electrical and EPMS related risk items with the AE SMEs
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, design guides/standards, sequences of operation, and commissioning documents for technical compliance.
  • Support and oversight of submittal review, RFI responses, and commissioning activities.
  • Facilitate timely response and enable seamless project execution.
  • Possess a high level of understanding of commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design.   
  • Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology including the ability to read and interpret construction drawings and requirements documents is essential. 
  • Working knowledge of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS)
  • Must possess strong leadership competencies and a willingness to collaborate and work cross- functionally to maximize business results and positive customer experiences. 
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills to be used at varying levels of business up to and including business executives.  
  • Able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament.  
  • Be a person of integrity, be methodical, and detailed-oriented.
