Microsoft is seeking a Software Design Engineer II to contribute to its Azure Operator Nexus platform, focusing on edge computing and hybrid cloud solutions. Responsibilities encompass developing network components, participating in design reviews, troubleshooting live site issues, performing testing and validation, and implementing automation tools. The ideal candidate possesses expertise in networking technologies (Ethernet, VLANs, TCP/IP, BGP, etc.), coding skills (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python), and experience with distributed systems and DevOps practices. The role involves collaboration with engineering and program management teams to build scalable, reliable, and high-performance network solutions for mobile operators.

Overview

We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer II to join our team! Azure’s core priority is to be world's most trusted, secure, and global cloud and a great place for people to work. Azure Operator Nexus platform is building a team to help develop an edge computing platform to automate and manage the customer hybrid cloud platform and workload deployments and the next generation Internet of Things. You will build, design and operate platforms and products that help mobile operators leverage the Azure to accelerate the digital transformation of their core network operations in order to launch new services in an agile fashion, elastically scale to meet every growing demand for mobile service and dramatically improve operational efficiency thru infrastructure simplification and process automation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, fiber optics, 802.1Q VLANs, VRF (Virtual Routing and Forwarding), TCP/IP, DHCP, BGP, MPLS, and VxLAN (Virtual Extensible LAN), dual-stack (IPv4 & IPv6) IP addressing, and IP network design.
  • Experience with configuration, management, diagnostics of network devices (switches, routers) and protocols (ethernet & routing protocols).
  • Ability to engage DevOps engineering practices
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in building, shipping and operating reliable, distributed systems software
  • Ability to learn and grasps concepts quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • Remarkable problem-solving skills and outstanding drive for results
  • Commitment to collaboration and teamwork and ability to deliver via influence
  • Self-starter, who proactively identifies problems and drives for resolution
  • Experience with containers and Kubernetes
  • Solid technical and design Skills towards problem solving w.r.to Scale and Optimization.
  • Solid analysis and communication experience including customer critical issues and resolution.
  • Experience with Openconfig and gNMI
  • Solid programming experience in GoLang Languages with Data Structures and Algorithms
  • A bias towards action to identify the best approach.
  • Solid communication, verbal and written English skills.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Develops network components (e.g., device, software, tools) based on customer, business, and technical requirements that have been defined in partnership with engineering and Program Management teams; ensures that designs meet all functional, performance, scale, and compliance requirements with minimal guidance. Applies knowledge of network technologies to contribute to network design, implementation, and operation.
  • Actively participates in design and network or code reviews to identify risks and prevent classes of bugs prior to production release, define essential details related to network implementation (e.g., physical connectivity, power, protocols, telemetry), and shares best practices in implementing and qualifying designs based on relevant past experience.
  • Independently develops reliable, scalable, and high-performance designs for network components, and features; assists with producing and maintaining design documents and implementation plans.
  • Triages, troubleshoots, and repairs live site issues by applying an understanding of network components and features (e.g., device operating systems) as well as problem management tools (e.g., root cause analysis, trend analysis, postmortems), to discover and drive solutions with minimal or no disruption to customers; participates in on-call/DRI duties to troubleshoot incidents in production
  • Performs testing and validation of network devices, firmware, and configurations; defines and implements test cases with existing automation tools and addresses test coverage gaps by enhancing automation tools as needed. Contributes to the design and implementation of automated tools and services to increase engineering efficiency, reduce operational burden, and reduce human errors in production; uses existing automation and makes suggestions for improvements to existing automation to increase efficiency and reduce errors based on learnings and experience.
  • Proactively shares information across disciplines within their feature team in a timely manner with an appropriate level of detail that is tailored to their audience; proactively manages dependencies for their work with others.
