Job Description

As a Staff Software Engineer with Android Automotive at Google, you'll develop platforms and services bringing Google's ecosystem to vehicles. You'll tackle challenges like bridging car sensors and Android Frameworks, building driver-safe user experiences, and defining the future of Google's AI technologies. You will lead engineering teams spanning low-level system architecture to application development and backend systems. Responsibilities include participating in design reviews, setting team priorities, aligning strategies across teams, leading and managing software engineers, guiding system designs, writing code, triaging issues, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. This role significantly impacts Google and the automotive industry. The Android Auto team collaborates with vehicle manufacturers to build an Assistant-powered vehicle system.
Must have:
  • 8+ years software development experience
  • 5+ years Android OS development
  • 3+ years software design & architecture
  • Data structures/algorithms expertise
  • Lead engineering teams
  • System design & code writing
Good to have:
  • Master's/PhD in related field
  • Cross-functional project experience
  • Technical leadership (3+ years)
  • Automotive industry experience

Job Details

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience with Android OS development.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience working in an organization involving cross-functional, or cross-business projects.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience with software development in the automotive industry.

As a Staff Software Engineer with Android Automotive, you will develop platforms and services that bring Google’s ecosystem to vehicles. You will address challenges like bridging the gap between car sensors and Android Frameworks, building feature rich user experiences that are driver distraction safe, and defining the future of Google’s AI technologies. You will lead Engineering teams capable of spanning low-level system architecture to application development and back-end systems. You will help us to reimagine the Android operating system, and apps and services for end users. This role has a high level of impact and influence within Google and across the automotive industry.

The Android Auto team collaborate with vehicle manufacturers to develop and deliver on this massive opportunity, building on a proven embedded platform to create a leading Assistant-powered, navigation, entertainment, and communication vehicle system, which will be delivered to specialized people-moving devices.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies.
  • Set team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams. Lead and manage software engineers.
  • Guide and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems.
  • Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with cross-functional teams to align agendas and strategies and promote collaborative environments. Identify and solve ambiguous, subtle, complex, or large-scale technical or organizational problems.
