Job Description

This role is for a Technical Supervisor/Senior Technical Supervisor within the Defense Technologies Engineering Division, supporting the Weapon Technologies and Engineering Program. The position involves leading and supervising mechanical, electronics, and operations teams, managing personnel actions, and ensuring adherence to engineering standards, safety, and security. It requires technical leadership in fabrication, assembly, and testing processes, collaboration on functional requirements, and participation in planning and decision-making. The role demands full-time on-site presence and may involve periodic travel.

  • Perform personnel related functions, including recruiting, hiring, retention, performance evaluation, and salary management.
  • Provide technical leadership of engineering fabrication, assembly, and testing processes to ensure quality, safety, and security.
  • Collaborate with technical staff to apply innovative expertise, solve complex problems, and evaluate design concepts.
  • Assist in the development of yearly cost/collection estimates and provide budgetary oversight.
  • Participate in planning, decision making, and change processes, including modifying guidelines.
  • Interact and maintain close working relationships with group leaders and program management.
  • Develop, prepare, present, and participate in required design reviews, reports, and procedures.
  • Provide highly advanced technical and administrative support, expertise, and guidance in applied engineering technology.
  • Utilize a high degree of independent discretion and judgment in making complex decisions and providing direction.
  • Represent division and program at internal and external meetings, briefings, and activities.
  • Communicate and inform management and outside collaborators of project status, budget, and schedule.
  • Mentor subordinate personnel for leadership succession planning and provide career development.
  • Partner with Administrative and Programmatic Senior Leadership for long-range strategic planning.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Technical Supervisor/Senior Technical Supervisor. You will perform a complete range of both programmatic activities and administrative supervision. This position will be primarily supporting B131 High Bay and may involve periodic travel to other NNSA/DOE/DOD sites. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate and supports the Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

In this role you will

  • Lead and provide technical and direct administrative supervision and oversight of work center/teams in mechanical, electronics, and operations areas, and other matrixed support personnel, including work planning, setting priorities, designating daily work assignments, as well as personnel actions and administration of policies and procedures.
  • Perform personnel related functions, including recruiting, hiring, and retention activities, performance evaluation and alignment, salary management, influencing the work environment to foster staff development, employee morale, and well-being, and making recommendations on promotion and disciplinary actions for group members.
  • Provide technical leadership of engineering fabrication, assembly, and testing processes to ensure quality and adherence to engineering standards, as well as safety and security of work center activities.
  • Collaborate with the technical staff to apply innovative technical expertise on the definition of functional requirements, solve complex technical and resource problems, and evaluate alternative design concepts consistent with schedule, cost, and material limitations.Assist in the development of yearly cost/collection estimates for the work center and provide budgetary oversight of work center activities.
  • Participate in planning, decision making, and change processes, including modifying guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • Interact and maintain close working relationships with group leaders and program management to provide technical support for and to ensure timely and cost-effective execution of supportive engineering services.
  • Develop, prepare, present, and participate in required design reviews, reports, procedures, and other communications in support of technical and administrative assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 390.2 level

  • Provide highly advanced technical and related administrative support, expertise, guidance, and advice in the areas of applied engineering technology, including planning, design, fabrication, project support, testing, and evaluation where the qualitative and quantitative complexity of the project assignments demand original and innovative problem solutions.
  • Utilize a high degree of independent discretion and judgment in making frequent complex decisions, and in providing direction to technical staff.
  • Represent division and program at meetings, briefings, and other activities both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Communicate and inform management and appropriate outside collaborators of project status, budget, schedule, and workforce effort levels.
  • Mentor subordinate personnel/team members for leadership succession planning and provide career development and technical guidance. Assess, determine, and direct staff training requirements, efforts, and opportunities.
  • Partner with Administrative and Programmatic Senior Leadership for long-range strategic planning to establish and ensure department’s missions, goals and work activities are met.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, or related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with handling procedures for pressure and vacuum systems.
  • Experience providing administrative and technical leadership through the effective utilization of people and available resources, including budget planning and oversight, and anticipating and identifying programmatic needs.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering project leadership, including work planning, scheduling, drawing requirements, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Work Control processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in a high-consequence safety environment, including solving complex problems in a multi-tasked environment, often with minimal instruction and direction.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with people at all levels and ensure that program requirements are conveyed in a timely manner.
  • Ability to periodically travel to Nuclear Security and DoD Sites in support of program missions.

Additional qualifications at the 390.2 level

  • Extensive experience working in, leading, and supervising multidisciplinary teams to meet project requirements and deadlines.
  • Highly advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, and significant experience making independent fundamental decisions and developing solutions regarding highly complex technical problems.
  • Highly advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to supervise a team, present/explain technical knowledge, provide feedback, and advise management, regulators, reviewers and stakeholders.
