We are seeking an ambitious editor to oversee the desk that covers it all. 

You also have a strong news metabolism and a record of breaking stories and producing competitive coverage, including analysis and investigations. You have a sense of curiosity about the world as well as a critical eye for whether studies and research pass muster. You are an adept manager who will build relationships and collaborate on coverage with desks across the newsroom, notably Washington, National and Well. 

You will oversee a daily report across multiple formats: text, video, photo, graphics, audio and more. You will also be responsible for the culture of the desk, ensuring the success, morale, and development of its reporters and editors. 

This position is based in our New York City headquarters. It is a full-time role that includes regular attendance in the office each week. It reports to Carolyn Ryan, managing editor.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a multiformat report, including driving competitive news coverage and ambitious enterprise, and incorporating visual and other forms into the report  

  • Develop and uphold the culture of the Health and Science desk

  • Collaborate with colleagues on desks across the newsroom

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

  • Manage the desk, including setting desk goals and overseeing performance

  • Represent the department at meetings to discuss the day’s news and enterprise targets 

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience as an editor 

  • Experience assigning stories and directing coverage

  • Track record of embracing new storytelling forms 

  • Strong news judgment

  • Demonstrated leadership experience 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience managing large teams of reporters and editors 

  • Experience editing and/or reporting on Health & Science subjects 

  • An eagerness to coach and support colleagues

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $200,000.00 and $250,000.00.
